Filton, Bristol, UK

Here’s my first post!!!

Driving down the A38 past the Eastern end of the main runway at Filton, Bristol, I have been watching the slow growth of a scaffolding like structure just north of the Royal Mail depot – what’s all that about????

Just being nosey

In a word Filton welcomes GA, there is only 1 training organisation there to my knowledge in the form of Aeros, and alot of privately owned GA aircraft there, (EDITED to say, sorry Coanda, just read that you posted this 🙂 ) they fit you in really well, I had a flight today and when I returned they were extremely busy but accommodated me really well as ever, they get alot of ILS approaches there from training aircraft so it can get busy sometimes but nothing too great.
There isn’t too much at Filton to look at, obviously Concorde is there, there is no restaurant or cafe as such but a very short taxi ride will see you in Filton itself and there are a few cafes etc there, it is even walking distance if you have a spare 20 minutes, visiting aircraft get the privilage of parking on apron 1 which is by the ops building, us residents have to use apron 2 which is the other side of the airport and have to drive, if you arrive and they tell you to park in apron 2 tell them to shove off as you can’t walk to the ops office :). Landing fees I “think” are about 15 pounds.

well, theres at least one flying school, and privately based ga, so they shouldnt be too fussy, as they are not that busy…….my 2004 (i dont fly with it, dont worry!) pooleys gives filton (egtg) as being a PPR airfield.

Deano — apols for borrowing the thread … how amenable is Filton to GA? (Reply by PM if you’d prefer!)

Thanks for the info guys, I wondered if it was related to the development at the southern end of the site but it just seemed a little “out on it’s own”. I guess that building will impede the view of the apron from the road now then. Just in time for pre season fun and games from G-RRGN!!!! Although I have a great view from my office window on Aztec West once she’s up!

Nice to see a couple of chaps from my neck of the woods, us Sou’westers are in short supply here, welcome to the forum chaps, I fly out of Filton and I did hear on the grapevine, or it could have been the Bristol Evening Post that they are to chop part of the runway off at the far end of rwy 27, anyone got any news on this? apparently it is to make way for development?

It’s a temporary building (well a big tent in fact) in which a 600 ton, 9m diameter autoclave will be assembled so that AUK at Filton can produce A350 plastic wings.

The site development plans were recently “rolled out” and “WOW “they’re impressive, 3 major new (and very big) buildings/assembly halls. It’s not just talk either, the contractors, complete with their tonka toys, started to arrive last week…….. the on site parking for employee’s, already a nightmare, is set to become imposible during this construction phase.
