Find me a job

I have decided that my current job, as a property valuer for a local firm of surveyors, is actually incredibly dull and not really what I want to be doing.

My life long love has been aviation, and as such I feel a career in this area would actually interest me. Pilot is pretty much out of the question, as is anything with the military at the moment, I feel I am too unfit at present. Does anyone have any idea how tough the fitness tests for the RAF are?

What other areas could I go in for, I’m good with my brain, not so good with my hands, so that rules out anything mechanical. I’d prefer not to have to go back to Uni or College too.

Any ideas?

I almost don’t want to ask but….

What did you do?

I turned my hobby into a business, servicing and repairing VW Beetles in north London.
Final workshop base was in St Jame’s lane, Muswell Hill, underneath the old railway arches.

I named the business Beetlemania in 1975 and it was almost an instant hit, with punters flocking to the door to pay 50% less for parts and labour than they had to at the VW main agency.
Had to employ some other mechanics to help out and trained up a few juniors.

Sold up in 1988 and moved to sunny Spain in Jan 90, haven’t worked since.

Tenthije – What work would someone in the DHL airfreight Tamworth office do?

It would not be at the airport, neither is a position at the airfreight department guaranteed. There are open positions in trucking in other departments as well. You’d be arranging transports. Could be continental (trucking) or internationals (air/ocean).

Thanks for all the advice, BlueRobin – no I don’t have a PPL, I’ve only flown I think four times, and all these as passenger on the likes of Easyjet.

To BlueRobin, Joglo, Armwaver – What sort of work do you do?

Tenthije – What work would someone in the DHL airfreight Tamworth office do?

Ideally, I would like to work on-site ie/on an airfield, or even several. I have a degree in Building Surveying, so I guess airfield maintenance work might suit me?

Instructing at weekends can be quite rewarding. Do you have your PPL?

My company, DHL Exel Supply Chain, has recently gained a few big accounts. I believe our Tamworth branch is hiring now. I do not know if positions are available at the airfreight department, but you might want to try your luck. I can not supply you with a few contact though as I only got limited contact with Tamworth branch.

It’s taken me 6 months to secure a full-time job back in the industry I used to be in 2 years ago. Just so you are aware of the risks… a change of job with new people can actually be quite refreshing. Could you contract?

Take it from me – in order to get a job in “aviation” I have found that many employers want either experience or qualifications and many, many times you can’t get one without the other.

You need people to take a chance on you and in this current climate I think that is not going to be easy.

I have experience of airfield running/inspection etc but any qualifications I have are American rated and not UK and I can’t get anyone to take the “risk” of testing my knowledge and it can be disheartening and I know of someone else with more extensive time in post doing such stuff and he has been turned down for posts as his skills and knowledge are just not recognised.

Sorry to be doom and gloom but I thought best let you know what it is like out there.

If you get anywhere put a word in for me please!

I didn’t find out that I was good with my hands, apart from model plane (not plastic) making, until I was 23, but didn’t really get my hands dirty, apart from working on the car, until the age of 27.
Even then I didn’t realise my full potential, that began to happen from age 33 and I retired at 47 with enough to live a good life on until death us do part.

Few people seem to realise that fortunes can be made with dirty hands and it’s not that demanding.
