FINNAIR MD11

Flying Finnair Manchester/Helsinki/Bangkok in November. Its a MD11, and im lucky enough to be flying business, anyone flown on the type, or sampled Finnair ? Have to say always like DC10s (which I flew on years back, Laker and BCal) so really looking forward to it.

Cheers

but can you ride on a freighter?;)

They may be in service but they aren’t PAX carriers.

Care to explain why an MD-11 carrying passengers is somehow “more in service” than an MD-11 carrying cargo – especially the 50 or so MD-11s that were built as ‘pure’ freighters?

Like PMN, I’m afraid the distinction escapes me.

An MD-11 earning a living is an MD-11 earning a living, surely?

There might not be many pax MD-11’s but there are still plenty of cargo examples.

Lufthansa
Martinair
Alitalia
Cargo Italia (Adding three to their fleet this year)
Aeroflot

Lots more comments, great !! I think the DC10 followed by the MD11 are my favourite aircraft, always had a thing for Tri-Jets, just a bit difference. I live between Manchester and Liverpool Airports, but have watched Liverpools progress more over the years, from very small with just flights across the Irish Sea, to what it is today. DC10s would occasionally drop in there for football charters and the like, always good to see.
I can think of a number of DC10 operators in Europe from the past, UTA,JAT,Swissair,Alitalia,KLM,Sabena,SAS,BCal,Laker,Lufthansa.

Now just Finnair with their MD11s !

Looks like its just Finnair, TAM and KLM still using these on regular pax flights with World Airways using them under contract to Air Mobility Command in the USA. The remainder it would seem are now used as freight only aircraft.

What ones are out of service/written off/crashed?

From what I can find, there has only been five actual hull-loss accidents.

Fedex at Newark in 1997
Swissair at Nova Scotia in 1998
Korean Air after departure from Shanghai in 1999
China Airlines at Hong Kong in 1999
Fedex at Subic Bay in 1999

As always, I’m happy to be corrected.

I have flown on Finnair but it’s a few years ago, in an MD82. I found them very good, with pleasant crews. We had a veggie meal booked which was a bit strange and I didn’t eat it, but the rest of the food looked OK.

We had flown Icelandair the year before and I can definitely say that I preferred Finnair!

I was lucky enough to fly Zurich-Bangkok on Thai MD-11’s a few years ago, usually HS-TME. From the passenger point of view they were even more dated than Thai’s 747’s, but I loved them because there was always something “different” about them, ie compared to the endless Boeings and Airbuses. Always had a soft spot for the DC-10/MD-11 ever since my first ever widebody flight with National (who were then being absorbed into PanAm in (I think) 1980. Never flown Finnair, but I remember seeing one of their 757’s at Phuket and thinking it seemed an odd type for that length of route.

Just been and come back from Brazil on a TAM MD11 from MXP to GRU. A bit long in the tooth and very basic in-flight entertainment. Business would be better but company policy means we have to fly in the back

Is there some sort of train of thought that once a/c built for pax are converted to freighters, they are somehow “downgraded” in the minds of people? “Oh, they’re just freighters now…” – DC-8 is still going in such a configeration……

Yeah but roughly 50% of them are cargo craft.

Yes, you’re right.

Only 192 currently active worldwide out of a total production run of 200….. 😎

Yeah but roughly 50% of them are cargo craft.

Flem KLM MD11 Amsterdam to Memphis and back in 1999. Comfy seats, having a row of 3 to myself each way. These were the days however before individual IFE units so it was quite a squint to see the overhead screens. KLMs long haul service at the time was superb. Great take off performance on the MD11, enjoy.

Unfortunatly a house fire cost me all my logs and most of my pictures of the trip.

And most of what are in service are surely freighters anyhow with FedEx or World Airways.

What ones are out of service/written off/crashed?

Main one I can think of is the China Airlines(?) crash at Hong Kong.

Other 7?
