Very sad to learn this morning that a fire destroyed a large part of the 1930’s Flying Club (now/was Chef on the Road Cafe) not sure many realised just how old (and important) these old wooden sheds are.

Here are some photos of the building being constructed early in 1930 and also when it was used by 15 E&RFTS for grading Polish pilots prior to the Battle of Britain and later used by the RAF.

No, Chalky has moved on, seems just about everyone of any vintage interest has had life made impossible with rent increases or moved on. He now has a shop in Dorking. The main centre of the fire seems to be the cafe which was a very modern fit out, they cladded over all the interesting bits! still business should be good for the other Cafe in Hanger 9!!

Was that where ‘Chalky’ White of AceBell kept all his treasures??

With the attitude of the airfield owners I am guessing not, in fact might of done them a big favour.

Looks bad. Hope that something can be salvaged.
