fire dump airframes

Its probably over the years been done to death this particular thread however, why did so many historic aircraft end up as fire practise hulks? i appreciate that there is a need to train for the ultimate accident but why so many classic aircraft were sidelined is a little unclear to me,there must have been more mundane types to be used instead of Hastings,Daks,Lincolns .Lancs etc im posing this question as when the wings were removed from TG537 at Catterick she was a berlin airlift veteran which had been on exhibit at the Ulster Transport Museum earlier in her Career.I was amazed to find her at Catterick and so had a crisis of concience ie why were we stripping this historic aircraft that shouldnt be here as it were, in the end the wings werent used so it was all wasted effort, leaving TG537 to her fate, 😎

TG536 wing(s)

A few years ago they were still outside at Elvington (the original outer wings of TG536 that is)

Cees

At least one has now been painted up and put on display in a Queen Mary trailer.

If I believe correctly the centre section of the Catterick Hastings was used in the Halifax recreation . The outer wings were not used due to corrosion – a set was located in a scrapyard on the south coast and purchased.

the reason they corroded was due to being left lying around for months without being protected
