I also seem to remember some Fireflies stuck in Ethopia, in varying degrees of disrepair, I think.

The Canadians had 2 in the early `90’s.
2 ? went to SouthAfrica in the late `90’s

But some other compleat aircraft were ment to be still there in `99
Are they still there ? if so why, I would have thought that they are highly desirable.
pics. of them all in the early ’90 s. below

Link to Firefly pics.

My memory of a Flypast (or Aeroplane) article was that most of the Fireflies were removed by a Canadian person/organisation.

Has anybody ever done a multi-year index for Flypast? That would be worth a few quid for easy reference.

It was Saabs that I remember – so, same batch that Steve mentions. Sorry about the misinfo Flat, time goes by more quickly as you get older.

Thanks Steve.
It was Saab B17’s, I did a search & came up the info that 2 B17’s were recovered to South Africa in ’99. I would assume that it was the same team that recovered 2 (?)Firefly’s also in ’99 back to SA.
That still leaves the possibility (reported as being seen) that some more Firefly’s were still in Ethiopia only 4 years ago.

I seem to remember that a Firefly was discussed on the WarbirdIndex site either last or earlier this year.

I don’t remember which mark or in which country but I certain that it was on the African continent and IIRC was described as complete and being in the Posters’ back garden!

I also remember that the person concerned, didn’t receive many responses to his post, so maybe this was a new twist to the African Prince with much money to distribute following his father’s demise and needs a bank in which to….

Saab B17 was mentioned, but I’ve not heard anything else about that. Think it was a pair of those…

Oh heck. I thought it was within the last few years, but could easily have got that wrong. All I recall is that other types were also involved.

Sure somebody will have the info on such a significant cache. If I’ve initiated a goose chase – my apologies…..

Marauder

I think that must be the Canadian ones, 1 of which I know is well on its way to flying again.
The SA ones are in storage ?
Have I missed another report on the last ones being recovered ?

Sure there was an article in, I think, Flypast a few years back concerning recovery of said Fireflies and other types. Showed pics of them indoors in their new location – but I can’t remember where (!)
