Firewalls & IP Addresses??????????????

Calling all computer nerds, i’ve just recentley taken an interest in Firewalls and IP addresses and its really good stuff!. Apparantley firewalls can keep out unwanted traffic interefernce from outside hackers and also help to keep your PC safe, this must be a good thing if your into computer jargon but for those who are not could anybody expand on that??.

what are IP Addresses??

many qustions i know but us computer novices remember the early days of the internet boom where things like Trojans and firewalls were something in ancient medieval times!:7

Thanks for any help u can offer!

RE: Are you crazy?

There are 3 basic reasons you are likely to be hacked:

1) Personal info- Now that bussinesses are exersiszing better computer securtiy, hackers are more and more breaking into peoples personal PCs in search of credit card numbers and other info to steal. You should not store any valuable information on you PC.

2) Launch attacks- Hackers use other peoples computers to remotely attack other computers and store ilicit info. This is more likely if you have a fast, always on connection and a fast computer. High CPU activity at slow periods or strange unknown files on your computer are tip offs.

3) Vandalism- Though the chances are low, it is possible you could be randomly picked by a hacker to screw up your system. In my case I wouldnt care as Ive had to do about 4 harddrive formats and reinstalls in the last 2 months too my malfunctioning computer.

RE: Are you crazy?

Dead right Frank. As a for instance, in this case do you study at Ohio State University or do you work there Toorandy?

If I wanted to find out who you are, specifically, I can do many things not least crack into your login server and get your login details or, even more simply, call the number listed by ARIN for your Universities’ technical support (+1-614-292-5555) and tell them some story about you misbehaving in some fashion on the net and requesting your details “to forward to the relevent authorities”. Bingo I’ve got you.

Be very, very careful about the information you put out here.

Are you crazy?

1) IP Adresses are in 99% of cases dynamic. Usually, only those devoted to servers are fixes.

2) Giving out an IP is the BEST WAY to get hacked. That you are at it, give us also your username from your mailprogram, and your password. Ow, yes, I forgot, also your credit card number…

In conclusion, and this is TRUE for everyone here: NEVER give your IP!!!!!!

Btw, regerding the mane I got through a traceroute, the name related to the IP you gave does not look like a PC….

RE: Firewalls & IP Addresses??????????????

It is in the “internet connection options” of WinXP. If you don’t have another firewall, use that one, it’s better than nothing. (But I have some doubts regarding its efficacity versus some other Micro$oft products 😀 )

RE: Firewalls & IP Addresses??????????????

If you want to see how secure your pc is from internet based attacks visit http://www.grc.com and take the Shields Up and Leak Tests.

That will tell you what ports are open and what ports are closed

If Zone Alarm running it will say all ports are stealthed eg invisible to internet attackers

RE: Firewalls & IP Addresses??????????????

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 13-02-03 AT 05:05 PM (GMT)]munnst- Im by know means expert on the subjuct of computers, but much of what youve said is plain wrong and should be cleared up.

Okay so you’ve telnet to an active port on a PC, err, then wot? Send me a UDP, TCP packet maybe or a little html? That’s not exactly what I would call gained access.
If it was easy to connect to a port on a PC and gain access to it why write virus’s???

Once a hacker gains access to your comp (on a server this means getting root access) he can do anything he wants including using your computer to launch attacks on other computers so as not to be traced. Remote hacker programs like backoriface gives the hacker more control over your computer than you have with a windows OS.

Just connect to all those vunerable PC’s and insert your virus.

The idea of a virus/worms is that its automated, they just go out on their own to do (most often) destructive work, whereas in hacking, the hacker wants direct control of your computer.

The very fact that people need a medium to transfer that virus i.e. email and the fact that the virus has to be activated i.e. double clicked indicates that it isn’t as easy as you think to gain access.

You probably havent heard of the nimda virus than, it doesnt reguire the recipient to click anything. The reason their arent very many powerful viruses like that is because theyre difficult to write. Famous viruses like Melissa and I Love You never could really carry out instructions they were meant to because its very complex to do this.

Unless you sell firewalls of course.

No inbound connections? Are you crazy? Do you know how many ports a common PC has?

Hey Frank

Frankvw- I have a further idea for virus protection on the internet. Would having two hardrives and only using one harddrive to go on the internet isolate viral/malicous code to that HD, or could it affect the other harddrive like you mentioned about linux writing to fat or ntfs files while on a seperate partition?

RE: Firewalls & IP Addresses??????????????

Depends… But you can access other partitions (fat and ntfs) from linux, so, I don’t see the sence of such an install… Besides, many sites are written for IE only, so you’ll have problems with them. Linux as firewall is OK. But it has to be a separate computer.
