First 787 receives "Kagami Wari"

Final assembly has begun on the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner destined for delivery to launch customer ANA (All Nippon Airways) of Japan.

ANA and Boeing launched the 787 program with a firm order for 50 of the all-new composite jetliner. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2010.

Boeing and ANA celebrated the occasion with a traditional “Kagami wari” ceremony, the breaking open of a wooden “Taru” (sake barrel) lid with wooden mallets.

The 787 Dreamliner has 865 orders from 56 airlines, making it the fastest-selling all-new jetliner in aviation history.

This could be the first 787 story to mention ‘all composite’ and ‘wooden’ in the same report. Hey now, didn’t the De Havilland Mosquito do rarther well for itself, fashioned from trees…?:D

Aah, but those designers knew what they were doing with a material they fully understood. They also made one of the most attractive aeroplanes ever fashioned.

smells like it.
How many order have they lost on 787 compared to gains ?
and remember every one of these delayed frames is now costing Boeing a lot of $

All Nippon Airways has increased its order for Boeing’s troubled 787 Dreamliner to 55 aircraft… up from 50.

ANA was the launch customer for the next-generation Dreamliner… which has been beset by delays.

ANA said it would also sell 182.6billion yen ($2.4bn) of new shares to help it weather an industry downturn caused by the global economic crisis and a flu pandemic.

In April… ANA announced a net loss of Y4.26bn for the year to March

Tokyo, JAPAN – All Nippon Airways (ANA) said in a statement that it was “disappointed that the first flight of the 787 would be postponed, and urge Boeing to specify the schedule for the program as soon as possible.”

ANA also said that it will continue talks with Boeing on compensation for the delays including the latest one, and that it will probably seek to reduce the purchase price of the new jet as compensation.

A spokesman at Japan Airlines said there is no change in its order for 35 787 jets with an option to buy 20 additional airplanes, and doesn’t know yet how long they have to wait because of the latest delay.

Looks as if cousin Tatsuya will be taking delivery of his 787 late. Ah well, maybe he likes life in Seattle.

I hope it’s a big ‘Taru’

BTW, one of Tatsuyas (& my partners) uncles was also a pilot, but his career was rather different, & much shorter. He trained for & carried out a one-way solo flight in the 1940s.

My partners cousin Tatsuya is a (the first?) ANA 787 captain, & I think he’s scheduled to take delivery of that 787. He’s pictured on the ANA 787 promotional site (in Japanese only) –

Click on “Story”, & he’s the pilot in picture 07.
