Belated Happy New Year to you all. I’m back after me hols, during which I managed to read “First Light”, by Geoff Wellum, ex 92 Sqn BoB pilot.
Anyway, just wanted to recommend it, an absolutely fascinating read. Go buy it tomorrow. Meanwhile, I’m off to start reading the last fortnight’s threads. I may be some time… 😀

two good german books: Spitfire on my tail by Ulrich Steinhilper and of course, The first and the last by Adolf Galland. 🙂

Thanks moggy. It is always easier to rely on someone else’s memory.

Hardest Day by Alfred Price.
Fascinating read, one of the best books on the BofB.

Merlin70 was nearly there.
The title you are looking for is “The Hardest Day” the story of the 18th August 1940.
I’ve a copy at home. I can get you full details this evening.

Sorry patb, Richard Hillary wrote the last enemy. That was a good read but is not the title I was thinking of. The Longest Day references on the internet refer to D Day. It was definately not D Day, but recalled the various battles that took place over the south of England on one particular day during 1940, as recalled by pilots of many different squadrons and I think also some Germans.
Some one who doesn’t suffer from grey matter overload might recall what it was called and by whom.

First Light – totally absorbing
I agree. I couldn’t put the book, ‘First Light’, down, it really put you in the cockpit.
I don’t know of any German books but there is one called The Longest Day which I found to be an excellent read. All about September 1940 or there abouts. I think the Author was Richard Hilary.
Another book, which is memoirs from many Canadian pilots and is called ‘We that are left REMEMBER’. ISBN 0-9731808-0-3. I provided some of the photos so I am a little biased. Probably aren’t many copies in the UK, but I am happy to lend out my copy.

Whilst I haven’t read the book (My dad has) I’ve heard most of the audio tape version and was impressed with what I heard.
Well worth having alongside the book!
I’ll have to check it out properly some time.
Cheers

Got “First Light” a year or two ago – brilliant stuff. A bit “different” from the norm of ex-RAF autobiographies, I think.

Bought it on the last day of my holiday in Scotland last Summer. Read the first 80 pages without putting it down until ‘last light’ over the Moray Firth stopped me. Brilliant.

I have read it, thoroughly enjoyed it. Being a flyer myself I really enjoyed the sortie in the cloud on the East Coast. Go read it.
