First of the Few film

Just been watching this film and wondered which Spitfire fitted with a 2 Blade watts propeller they used to portray the prototype,
It looks like either a Mk 2 or a MkVa, also what airfield was it flown from?

Many thanks for any information

Thank you again gentlemen for all the information.
One of these days I am going to be able to stop the dvd at the right time to see the actual serial number of the Spitfire used, it does not look like K5054 in the film.

Mark12 does J.Quill mention this serial number in his log book?

Whilst watching the film again when it shows the workers putting the aircraft together it looks like the later type internal windscreen being fitted yet whilst its being wheeled out its fitted with the earlier type. Am I becoming a rivet counter?:highly_amused:

The photo of the hangar came from the Museum at Woodley and has always been captioned as Henley-on-Thames, however I am certain that Henley never had that style of hangar
as only Robin type hangars were there, the hangar at High Post still exists although modified with a brick frontage.

Did the Mk.II fly with the two-blade prop, or did it revert back to a three-blade for filming those sequences?

Ref #6

I too have this image associated with the film..but it is credited as ‘Henley Aerodrome’.

Any comments?

I think the footage of the Spitfire MkII acting as the prototype might have been filmed at High Post as this photo seems to match the hangar that was used in the film.

“Film footage of Jeffrey Quill flying a Spitfire Mk II in the final scenes of the film. Jeffrey Quill’s log book records that the aerobatic flying sequences featured in the last 20 minutes of the film were made by him from Northolt on 1–2 November 1941, in a Spitfire Mk II, flying for one hour, five minutes on 1 November and for 45 minutes on 2 November 1941.”

The Spitfires were from 501 Squadron. They operated the MK II from June to September 1941, so Colerne, Chilbolton and Ibsley, are likely locations.

I’m pretty sure the Spitfire in the film wore the K5054 serial as well.
