RE: First pic of the Cathay Pacific A340-600!
Well it just so happens that a friend of my mother is the head of engines in Cathay Pacific Engineering. He was poached by Cathay from BA who had previosly poached him from…………RR!

CX signed a contract with RR in April this year. Contract no. 2101V for CX’s fleet expansion.

ROLLS-ROYCE POWERS REGIONAL FLEET EXPANSION FOR CATHAY PACIFIC
Rolls-Royce Trent engines have again been selected by Cathay Pacific Airways to
power new firm orders for three Airbus A330s and three Boeing 777s. The order
reflects the ongoing involvement of Rolls-Royce in the airline’s regional fleet
expansion plans. The list price of the engine business to Rolls-Royce is $150
million.
Mike Terrett, President – Civil Aerospace, Rolls-Royce, said: “Cathay Pacific’s
commitment to the Trent engine family is underlined through this order. They
were launch customer for the first of the series, the Trent 700, in 1995, and
Rolls-Royce is delighted that this long-standing relationship continues.”
Both types of wide-bodied twinjet will be used on Cathay Pacific’s regional
route network throughout Asia-Pacific. The A330s will be powered by 72,000lb
thrust Trent 700 engines while their Boeing 777s will be equipped with Trent
800s, rated at 84,000lb take-off thrust.
Cathay Pacific also operates 24 Boeing 747-400s powered by Rolls-Royce
RB211-524G/H-T engines. Later this year Cathay Pacific will become the Asian
launch customer when it takes delivery of the first of three Airbus A340-600
ultra-long-range four-engined airliners for which a third Trent variant, the
Trent 500, is the sole powerplant.

RE: First pic of the Cathay Pacific A340-600!
Not forgetting the RB211 in the Tristar days!
RR are usually keen on negotiating exclusive maintainance contracts with airlines in order to tie them in for a decade or so. Anyone know if this is the case with CX?

As most of Cathay’s fleet are powered by RR, they benefit from cheaper maintenance and purchase costs.
The only engine that is not RR is the CFM56-5c which is the A340-300.
thy use;
RB211-524H on the 747-400
RR Trent 800 on the 777-200/300
RR Trent 700 on the A330-300
RR Trent 500 on the A340-600

I doubt the RR loyalty is a colonial thing. More likely CX have some kind of long term agreement with RR – ie. they buy only RR, in return for which they get lower prices.
I’m sure there are some GE-only airlines too.

Is that anything to do with the colony been ex-british and some sort of old company policy

RE: First pic of the Cathay Pacific A340-600!
I think CX are all RR as you say apart from the A340-300’s (which they can’t have RR’s on). They always have been a very good RR customer if I remember correctly.

RE: First pic of the Cathay Pacific A340-600!
Is it just me reading too much into it, or does CX have a RR-only policy?
Only exception being the CFM56 on their A340-300 fleet.
