first time on here
It is good to see Melvin getting your advice, but my question for you is what settings do you use to take moving aircraft? for instance is it wise to use continuous shooting mode? and do you use a fast shutter speed 1/500 for example, how high an iso do you recommend, assuming there is good light. For us beginners it will help us to improve our shots. Thanks in advance.

Another thing I would suggest is to make sure that the horizon is exactly level. It will make a big improvement. You can do this in a free program I use call GIMP (Genetic Image Manipulation Program). Simply rotate the image til the horizon is level, then crop off the white bits which will appear at the edge of the image as you rotate it.

Hi Melvin,
Another LBA local? 🙂
The first thing to really do is try get a clean shot of the aircraft. In both the LBA shots the landing gear is obscured by the grass; the fence is also very distracting in the Ryanair one. Obscuring its of the aircraft like this really doesn’t add anything to the image; in fact it gives a very unbalanced feel overall, so try avoid it. If you’re shooting from the bench (like the Jet2 shot), just wait a few more seconds until they’re in the air and you can get a perfectly clean shot of them.
If you want to get to a point where you’re uploading to sites like Jetphotos and getting the majority of your work accepted there’s a lot of work involved and a fairly steep learning curve to get to grips with, but in time you’ll get there. For now I’d say don’t really worry about Photoshop and editing, but get to your local (which I assume is LBA) and spend some time just trying to get clean shots. That’s the very first thing you need to be able to do before even thinking about editing. I’m an LBA local myself (I’m in Bradford), so if you let me know next time you’ll be up then I’ll try come along as well and talk you through a few things. Also, spend time browsing sites like Jetphotos and Airliners.net and pay attention to the angles the aircraft are captured at. This should give you some ideas on how you can compose your shots and the different angles available to use. 🙂
