Five-engined Jumbo??

I have recently seen a couple of pictures of a Northwest Orient Boeing 747 with what appears to be a fifth engine near the left wing root. This is not a recent picture and I think dates back to the 1970’s.Was this some sort of wind up or camera trick??

OK thanks for clearing that one up people, although it does make me wonder how the handling of the aircraft is affected.

RE: Five-engined Jumbo??

Check out page 22 of Junes AIRLINER WORLD to see a more recent 5 engined jumbo.

The jumbo had the hard point designed to carry the 5th engine as some of you say to deliver a spare as it is cheaper to fly one out that way than to pay to air freight one out. It also mean you do not lose any hold space.

RE: Five-engined Jumbo??

The picture I have of it is on the front cover of a recognition book from 1971.
As for the idea of it being carried as a spare, didn’t the airlines used to have designated spares carrier aircraft as opposed to lashing them to the undersides of an airliner? It seems like a wierd idea I must say.My only thought is that it may have been used as some sort of test-bed,but then why the NW Orient colours??
Intrigueing to say the least…

RE: Five-engined Jumbo??

Or maybe they carried it to an airport where another 747 had suffered an engine breakdown. It is cheaper than buying one to another company. It also was frequent.

LAST EDITED ON 26-05-01 AT 07:00 PM (GMT)[p]Yes earlier planes used to carry an extra engine. I have a Qantas photo of a B707 with an extra engine. But a five engined jumbo is impossible man;-), u need same amount of thrust frm both L and R wings. A330 with n extra engine??, never seen or heard of it.

RE: Five-engined Jumbo??

I may be wrong,
but, sometimes aircraft like the A-330 carry a spare engine on the wing if the aircraft is going to be delivering it. I know that the A-330 wing is capable of the carrying more than 2 engines so if the aircraft is due to be transporting a wing, all the engineers have to do is attach it to the wing. This then saves room in the hold.

I may be wrong, but this may be why the aircraft have what you think is an extra wing

Shaun
