Can anyone tell me what colour flame floats burnt with. I understand that they worked that was when dropped from the aircraft sea water mixed with the chemicals contained in the flame float to produce phosphine gas. This gas burns spontaneously on contact with air. My first though is that the colour would be white(ish) due to link with phosphorous but I am no chemist so I would appreciate a definitive answer. Phosphine is a colourless gas that burns to produce dense white fumes of phosphoric acid. Certain phosphides react with water to produce phosphine gas. They are used as a fumigant and rat poison.
