Flat Screen TVs

Here’s the story. The wife finally agreed to let me get a gigantoid flat-screen TV. My question to you all is, what should I get, LCD or plasma? Is an LCD preferable over a plasma screen? I play a lot of video games, so will I destroy a plasma screen through burn-in? Anybody have any experiences or expertise to share?

So far, I’m leaning towards a Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK plasma display. Not worried about an actual all-up HDTV, as I have digital cable anyway (and the TV version is around $3000 USD more). This is apparently the end-all, be-all of plasma displays on the market right now. Here’s a link: http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelDetail?displayTab=O&storeId=11201&catalogId=13051&itemId=94540&catGroupId=32751&modelNo=TH-50PHD8UK&surfModel=TH-50PHD8UK

Star Wars? Forget that…I’ve got all the Alien movies on DVD :diablo:

And I think the 360 comes out here in the US on November 22, so mine will be here a day or two afterwards since it’s coming in the mail.

The best part is that the XBox system has codecs for all major types of surround sound: 5.1, DTS, THX, etc.

Aliens will do just fine although I only really like the first two installements. I imagine you are getting fairly impatient to get your Xbox 360 and everyday must be getting harder for you! I know I can’t wait to get my new PS3. :diablo:

SOC, when are you getting you’re XBox 360. My company is doing a complete reset on XBox assets prior to a release in Canada on November 24th I believe?
Congratulations on your purchase, you’ll be perfectly set up come Superbowl time! Enjoy!
There is a Sony 60inch on clearance for twenty-five hundred Canadian I have my eye on. My boss will let me have it if it isn’t sold by Christmas time! I am keeping my fingers crossed! :p If I get it, Star Wars Marathon at my place! 🙂

Already have an XBox 360 on the way 😀 And I did go out this afternoon and finally buy a damn TV. Got a 52-inch DLP HDTV, one of the brand new Mitsubishi 1080p ones. The picture quality is phenomenal. It’ll get delivered on Saturday, the furniture finally gets here on Friday. Now all I need is that XBox surround sound system thing and I’ll be set 😎

Halo2 on HDTV looks sooo nice. The local Best Buy has a big
HDTV (60″) running some Xbox driving game. It’s amazing how
good it looks. I can’t wait to see what halo 3’s going to look like.
Hopefully, xbox360 prices will drop by them so I can get it…. my
wife will not be happy….

Yeah, I also want to know if the bulb is easy to replace or if it has to be technically serviced or whatever. And I have seen some really good-resolution plasma HDTVs that you can still see pixels on. As for EDTV vs. HDTV-that was one of the first things I figured out 😀 As it stands I can probably get a 1080p DLP HDTV for around $3000. And that’s in the 60+ inch range, too.

Before you buy the DLP, find out how much a replacement bulb
will cost for it – some are over $500. You can pretty much be
sure you’ll have to replace it in 5 years. So if the DLP is $2,000,
and th ebulb is $500, but the plasma TV with a comparable
picture is $3,000, the DLP is probably a better buy.

However, I’ve seen some plasmas that are $2500 that were far
superior to any DLP’s within $1,000 of their price.

Plasma doesn’t mean good quality – many of the cheaper plasmas
are just EDTV, not HDTV – that’s why you see pixels. You’ll
usually see them for $1,500-$2,000. If you just pay $500 more
(“Just” $500, hah!), you get a much better TV.

DLPs look great. Probably the best picture for the price. Just find
out the price of the bulb first. Retailers will not mention the
replacement of the bulbs – it makes selling them harder. People
don’t like the idea of having to maintain a TV over time. Especially
when their OLD TV has been working fine since the 80’s or 90’s.

The 1080p DLP TVs that I’ve looked at have much better pictures than any plasma or LCD screens. You get pretty much zero pixellated edges, ghosting, or screening or whatever. And you can’t even see the pixels, like you can when you stare at a plasma from up close. LCDs are crap for gaming, their refresh rate I’ve found out is way too low. A plasma TV would be good if it’s a new one that has burn-in resistance, but it now looks like DLPs are the way to go.

DLP’s, LCD projections, and CRT projections all require a very
expensive bulb to display their image onscreen. This bulb burns
out in time, 3-5 years. These bulbs go from $200 to $500
dollars. Keep that in mind.

I was pretty usrethat I was going to buy a DLP, as they have
awesome pictures, resolution,a nd no ghosting and burn in. But
they do not last that long.

Plasma TV’s and CRT’s last much longer. Plasmas not so long as
CRT’s, but CRTs can only get to be around 34″.

I would only consider plasmas if I were planning on buying a new
big screen TV. They are more expensive up front, but they shoudl
last longer, and have better pictures, expecially for gaming.

On paper, LCD’s seem better for gaming, but play a game with
them, and you’ll see the ghosting and fading artifacts. I haven’t
seen one without them, and they ruin it for me.

I’d go for a plasma screen. See if it’s really stealthy 🙂

This is true. If the TV can’t handle an HD XBox game, then as far as I’m concerned it’s worthless.

True but TV signals, including HDTV, generally don’t match outputs from a current PC video card so a “slow” LCD screen may not necessarily be the weakest link.

in SOC’s case, I don’t think he’s using a pc video card to play Halo with the Xbox.

and you’d have to look plenty hard and have deep pockets to buy something with 4ms. A large majority of what’s being sold out there fall between 20 something to 12ms, with your occasional 8.

Current state of the art LCDs have a 4ms response time making them just as “fast” as any CRTs. Also, some manufacturers are starting to offer multi-year 0 dead or bright pixel warranties.

never tried plasma.. but I’m going to tell you straight out that LCD’s won’t be the best for gaming. Like everything else that uses an LCD.. cell phones, the PSP, laptops, etc. You run a high risk of having dead pixels. Both when purchasing.. and even if pixel perfect.. dead pixels developing in the future. There’s not much you can do about them.. and it really sucks if you develop a cluster in the middle!

Furthermore, current LCD technologies have not yet had the same refresh rates as a CRT. Meaning, you’re gonna see ghosting when there are fast moving objects (very apparent when playing games).

btw, still in shock you’re married. You are no longer cool! :diablo:

Found something new. Looking into one of the new 1080p 50+ inch DLP TVs. Saw some in Best Buy the other day and they do look really, really sharp. Plus, it’s 1080p. 1080p! And it won’t burn in Halo 2’s motion detector on my screen either 😀 So it looks like I’ll be going after one of these next weekend after the new furniture gets here.
