Flight Attendant Pops Emergency Chute, Escapes Plane at JFK
An upset flight attendant at John F. Kennedy Airport activated his plane’s emergency chute, slid down then made his way to his car and drove home, according to an airport official.
JetBlue Flight 1052 from Pittsburgh was taxing to a stop at Terminal 5, Gate C around noon Monday when a passenger got up from his seat before the plane’s pilot deemed it safe to do so. The man was trying to remove his baggage from one of the plane’s overhead compartments when the flight attendant confronted the man and asked him to return to his seat, the official said. The passenger and the male flight attendant exchanged heated words. For reasons that are so far unclear, the flight attendant then activated the inflatable emergency slide, went down the chute and ran into the terminal, the official said.
The attendant then took a shuttle bus to the long-term parking area at JFK, retrieved his car and drove home, the official said.

And he isn’t. Our ‘hero’ is no longer an employee of Jet Blue.

People get stressed occasionally; that’s a fact of life and I have no doubt whatsoever the guy who stood up before the plane stopped was an idiot (people doing that is one of my pet hates), but there’s absolutely no way the crew should lose it like that. If he can’t deal with a situation like that then he shouldn’t be flying.

Just make a PA that the cockpit seatbelt position indication system had indicated that passengers aren’t complying and we’ll be stopping until the offenders comply.

When they did that on my flights, I stopped the plane and told them that we would not move any further until they all sat down. Worked pretty well. 😎

I was on an arriving flight once where an attendant tried to remind passengers that they were not to leave their seats until the seat belt lights were off. He was basically ignored and shoved out of the way as passengers emptied the overhead bins while the aircraft was still moving.
I wouldn’t suggest doing what the said attendant did, but I can understand the frustration. After all, if anything went wrong, it would be the attendant who copped it, not the passengers.

Hmm In two minds on this one.
Yep I can fully understand the frustration, been there. I once got on an aircraft and decided I didn’t want to work it. However I didn’t sabotage the aircraft. I walked off, got an engineer to drive me back to base, got the missus to pick me up and had a beer at home.
Aircraft, passengers and crew carried on as normal and I dealt with my issues separately.

We are a cruel breed in engineering!!!!:D
No, it’s character building, all part of continuous improvement. 😀

I’ve had days like that! Pity it’s cost his job though:mad:
A mate of mine was rigging an Airbus door slide once. It was all “Arm, check, disarm, open, check, close. arm, check. disarm, open etc” and he got it wrong and set one off! He was hauled into the office and given his b********g and just escaped getting suspended. He said the worst part about the whole episode was that the rest of his gang called him “Nevil chute” for months! We are a cruel breed in engineering!!!!:D
