Flight Lieutenant W.S.Campbell was a member of 609 squadron during its post-war period. It is believed he was killed in a flying accident on 22 April 1956 whilst flying a Meteor 4 miles west of Selby, Yorkshire.
Does anyone have any details on him, or the incident itself please? Such as first and middle names, parents where buried, etc. (same kind of info as would be found on CWGC site)
Many Thanks,
Mark.

WOW!!!
Thanks ever so much Paul! That is superb, just what I needed, plus more. I really appreciate it. The information will be used on a Roll of Honour that will be put up once I complete the website I am working on (July hopefully). It’s great to have as much info as possible. Thanks again,
Mark.

RE: Flight Lieutenant Campbell, 609 (WR) Sqn.
Flight Lieutenant William Sanderman Campbell aged 33 was killed on 22 April 1956 in Meteor F8 WE895 while with 609 Sqn 4 miles south west of Selby
The aircraft was 1 of 4 in a section flying in line abreast at 35,000 ft. The leader ordered a half roll to starboard and a pull through but on completion at 24,000 ft No. 4 was found missing.
At some stage it is believed the pilot lost control ane ejected. However the face blind blew back over the top of seat and prevented the drogue chut from deploying correctly. Although pilot attempted manual release from the seat, he did not operate mechanism correctly and was killed on impact with the ground

Guess not. Worth a shot though, eh? I must admit, it’s way out of my time band. Hell, if it ain’t a single engined propellor driven camo painted gun carrier, then its a bus. And if it ain’t got a scoop under the chin, well, it just ain’t good enough……
