"Flight" Magazine 21 Nov 1958 Page 809

In one of my large notebooks I use for research I wrote several years ago that I should locate the above page.
Does anyone have a copy to hand and can tell me what’s on the page?

Yes i think some procedures were introduced specially for the early jets(which were always short of fuel!) and i wonder if the jet clock was part of helping to get (say) a wing of meteors down quickly in poor weather.
I vaguely remember reading something about it years ago, will try to read up on it sometime but hopefully one of the forum will know the answer.

At Wattisham – Hunters – (where I was a mere Met Man) in the early 50’s there was a “Jet Clock” up in ATC where the ATDs were entered – plus estimated endurance(s) – and if there was ‘No Reply’ from any a/c after the Endurance Time had been reached, it said “Look on the ground”!!!!

Cranfield Institute library has every “Flight” and “Aeroplane” magazine, and is open to the public. To borrow books you have to pay a subscription annually which is not cheap but very good stock of aviation books.A lot of like minded enthusiasts may not be aware of this facility.

Somebody must have thought that the clock was important because the Groves prize was quite prestigeous!
My guess would be that it was something to do with Air Traffic Control and possibly recovering Jet aircraft short of fuel. The ‘compass rose’ type of board it is mounted on looks a bit similar to the device that gave air traffic your transmit bearing for controlling(I know nothing about ATC and only visited one local control room years ago!!) but I guess you could combine elapsed time and relative bearing for controlling.
QDM/QGH ?? never could remember all the ‘Q’ codes 😉

I found the brief on HMS Eagle’s modernization and the retirement of RAF Chaplain-in-Chief A.S. Giles (taken POW in Java by the Japanese) to be more interesting… but that’s just me.

Jet clock, modified 21B/116 clock

Thanks DaveF68, now my library is somewhat more extensive and to hand as required.
The picture is now making more sense of the following notes I made from what ever I was reading it from. I had noted the following:

“has a G S Clock (21B/116) modified with brass contacts for every minute that lights a light. Photo’s and wiring diagram are included.”

Does anyone have any information on what a 21B/116 clock looks like , who made it etc and what its orginal intended use may have been?

Can do better than John!

The majority of Flight back issues are now on line – searching is a little messy, but you can usually find what you want

jet clock

John
Thank you for your quick reply, no doubt helped by a well organised library. None of the heading say “bingo” to me.
Beside my note I have “Jet Clock” written. Does any of the articles have anything to say about a clock?
