I have just heard from a friend that Flight of the Phoenix is to be remade. Dennis Quaid will take on Jimmy Stewarts role. It will be interesting to see how the handle the aircraft content. No doubt it will be computer generated!
They originally used a Flying Boxcar and an O 47, does anyone know what aircraft they are going to use.

Popular Mechanics site: “How They Raised The Phoenix”
Hi folks,
here a link to a Popular Mechanics site.
The site showes “How They Raised The Phoenix”!
It showes, which computer-generated (CG) imageries, full-size and scale models, vintage aircrafts and spare aircraft parts were used in the movie.
Production diagrams reveal how the Phoenix is built from the twin-boom C-119. 🙂
Very interesting!

Definately looking forward to this, but will have to wait until 4th of March for release in the UK.

Does some of us know the serial of the donators(Fuselage and wings)?

And if you go to British Pathe and search Paul Mantz you will get the film showing his fatal crash!

We had a thread on the original “Phoenix” a while back, complete with a link to photos of Mantz’s unfortunate crash 🙁

I understand they used real C119(s) and then spent a fortune on a large mockup for the crash sequence (on wires like Thunderbirds) and probably CGI on top of that
How can they ever hope to match the original ??? BTW did you know Paul Mantz was killed flying the “Phoenix” for the original

Hi,
I watched the trailer and while it follows the story to a certain degree I don’t really like watching remakes, so I probably won’t watch the film.
The Pheonix in this film is a C-119, don’t know if it’s a ‘real’ plane or a PC generated one.

This is awful news Septic, I am a big fan of the original film and I will be angry if the producers cheat and used CGs because in the original film a pilot lost his life making the film.
My favourite part in the film is when Richard Attenborough’s character bursts out laughing at the thought of being put in a toy plane.
Great stuff.
I say, lets all unite and not watch the film, just to show how much we like the original, with some REAL flying.

A friend of mine recently told me Paul Mantz’ July 8, 1965 accident was recently put on the NTSB website. It’s here:
The fact that alcohol was involved was rather shocking.

Oh, it’s a mule. At least that is one of the more printable names it was given by the pilots that flew them.

The Taiwanese C-119’s were withdrawn in 1997, I believe.
Cheers, Transall.

It was one of the hulks stored at Greybull WY for 20 years, they must have put some hours into getting it airborne again. There’s a pic of it on www.airliners.net transiting through Tenerife, looks very smart.
Hawkins and Powers were also flying another G model a couple of years ago, saw it at the CAF show in 2001. Not sure if it’s still operational as it wasn’t flown commercially, just for fun!
There’s an outfit in Alaska hauling fish with a couple of Boxcars, though I believe one may be grounded with engine problems.
Seem to recall that Taiwan or Indonesia still had military examples until recently, or even currently.
Don’t know 100% about the jetpack, but to correct myself, it’s a Westinghouse unit, not GE.

Have to be more subtle with hints to my girlfriend then, don’t think the box under the tree has one packed up inside.
