[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-02-03 AT 10:53 AM (GMT)]cheers Wys, that sounds a bit more feesible. What the pilot actually said was that they couldnt get a clear view of the runway, that explains it , thanks.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-02-03 AT 07:22 PM (GMT)]Quote – ‘As we approached MLA the pilot “missed” the runway, saying he couldnt see runway lights, we later found out from a local who used to work at the airport that there is an illegal race track along side the runway which confuses the pilots (can you verify that Wysiwyg?). We eventually landed on time.’
Yes there is a track (not sure how it could be called illegal?) near the airport but I would very much doubt it would have caused the go around. You said in the next post that ‘it p*ssed down for the first 2 days’ so I presume the weather was pooh when you arrived. It sounds most likely to me that the flight crew didn’t get the required legal visual reference to continue past decision altitude so they were legally obliged to go around.

Saab
Yeah it has a lot of charm and it seems to be extremely proud of the part it played in WW11.
I didnt get to see Valletta, well at least not from the ground , we took a boat trip around Grand Harbour which I found very interesting.
Apparently they have a serious pollution problem out there, they seem to have more rubbish than space and it’s causing a few problems.
Nevertheless I had a good break from the humdrum life I lead in sunny London.

RE: Flight report???????
Interesting report…
I travelled Air Malta, however, I travelled Air 2000 last year and they were of average quality in the charter market.
I agree Luqa airport itself is small, with a few shops and café. The airport is really busy in the winter with few airlines as you commented.
The buses were amazing! So old and full of character. I stayed in Le Meridean Phoencia infront of the bus station and so from our room you could see the hustle and bustle of the station. What did you think of Valletta?
I agree with you with regards to Malta. It seems as if all the buildings are falling apart and the roads are a nightmare! Yet it seems a relitively rich country. I think a large factor in this, however, is the lack of rain. It seems as if everything is in a constant drought especially visable on the terrain. Contrary to this I did find Malta a beautiful place with a lot of charm and history.

A good report Dave, its a shame you didn’t enjoy some parts of your hol. I see you had the same plane coming home… I have never had this when I have been abroad.
What were Air 2000 like then, any good. Service/staff etc.?

Kev
unfortunately the weather wasnt that good, the first two days it p*ssed down, on the third day the sun appeared but it wasnt that warm only about 60 degrees, but it was still better than England.

I take it you’ve been to Malta, so lets have your comparisons.

RE: Flight report???????
Well, at least those dumb arsed questions got a reaction from you lot.
The flight out last week was ok, we arrived at LGW North Terminal with plenty of time to check in without having to tear arse about, I hate rushing, the check-in was easy although it took a little time to get thru security, then that seems to the norm these days.
Our flight,AMM 575C,Airbus A320-G-OOAR took off on time, 15.30, quite an uneventful flight until we were 45 mins from landing when we hit some clear air turbulence, at least thats what the pilot told us it was, the plane dipped and vibrated for about 30 seconds, it was a bit uncomfortable but nobody seemed alarmed by it. The food wasnt bad, for airline food, I even had seconds.
As we approached MLA the pilot “missed” the runway, saying he couldnt see runway lights, we later found out from a local who used to work at the airport that there is an illegal race track along side the runway which confuses the pilots (can you verify that Wysiwyg?). We eventually landed on time.
The airport itself was small and compact and from when we alighted the aircraft to when we boarded the coach which took us to Bugibba, took only about 15 mins.
From then until we arrived back at airport a week later is censored.
Being a number cruncher I was disappointed with the airport, its busiest times are early morning and evenings, and as I didnt take my driving licence with me I couldnt hire a car, going by bus(they were something else!) would’ve meant changing in Valetta and a 2 hour journey and with the first bus not until 7am and the last one at 8.30pm there wasnt much point in spotting.
The flight home (AMM575D, AirbusA320, G-OOAR) took off from MLA 10 mins late but landed at LGW on time, no problems on this one spent flight watching “The Banger Sisters”, good film. 4 month old baby behind us prevented any of us sleeping, wow what a pair of lungs that kid had.
Malta itself I wasnt impressed with , somebody said , and I quote “What’s not been started wont be started, what has been started wont be finished and whats been finished is falling apart” if you can understand that then thats what the islands like, having said that I found the locals very friendly , and they all speak English.
Well, there it is , anything else you want to know put it on a post card and send it to my auntie Maud, thank you for your time and goodnight.

RE: Flight report???????
Dave,
welcome back.
We don’t want to hear you banging on about what the flight was like, the service, the trim etc., etc. We don’t want to see your holiday snaps of this aircraft or that aircraft basking in the warm Mediterranean sun….
Do we?
Of course we do. Look forward to seeing it.:-)
BTW, Hope you enjoyed your break.
