B737-500 G-GFFF
LGW-NCL
I could be accused of having a real ‘downer’ with BA but once again I find myself really unimpressed with the service on their 737 fleet on domestic flights. There is an overwhelming feeling of ‘think yourself lucky to be on my plane’ emmanating from the crews and the ‘all day deli’ is getting smaller by the minute!
Maybe I am alone in this but I’m not a fan of leather seats in aircraft. I never find leather as comfortable as fabric and if you are stuck in the middle seat of three (as I was) with large people on either side the leather seems to exacerbate the ‘sweatiness’ of the situation.
I did note that this aircraft did have the new phase 2 reinforced flightdeck door with keypad entry. It is the first BA 737 to be modified apparantly.
PA’s from the flightdeck were good except the Captain did not say the name of the FO, which was a shame as I knew a mate of mine was the FO on one of the BA flights from LGW to NCL that day but I didn’t know which one he was doing. I still don’t know if it was him in the right hand seat.
The whole experience was reminiscent of British Rail in the dark old days.
Overall I’d give it 4 out of 10.

Not me Bhoy, that game was subcontracted to STV, and the jib operator was my old chum Steve Pitt. I was there on Friday night though filming the Glasgow/Llanelli Heineken cup game for BBC Wales. (highlights on Grandstand)

talking of possible chance meetings, Ren, you weren’t by any chance operating a jibe camera at Hughenden when Ulster visited in the Celtic League in late November/early December? I was standing beside the operator the whole game, and it was live on Grandstand.

Ren – I went GLA-LGW in October after positioning a 757 to GLA. I sat next to my skipper on the way back down with no one in the other seat so no it wasn’t me.

RE: Flight report BA8077 LGW-NCL
My last BA shuttle was in October GLA-LGW and I was less than impressed by the service either. I was roughly in the middle of the plane (737) and the serving technique was to start at either end of the plane and meet in the middle. Needless to say there was nowt to my liking by the time they got to me, again a drink and sandwich were all that was on offer anyway. The cabin crew were already in a mood with me after I chose to divide my attention between the pre flight safety demo and a passing American Airlines 767 on the ground at GLA. Got a good telling off for that one !
Someone mentioned BA were getting a bit like US airlines in terms of their manners and service… well my girlfriend flew Continental on business between Glasgow and Newark last spring and filed a similar report of bad tempered cabin crew and poor service. For example, she wanted to have a glass of wine, they said she could have one and that was the limit. If she wanted another drink (7 hour flight) she’d need to buy a bottle from the duty free trolley. They also said they’d only take plastic as payment but actually had no card reader or means to accept the payment. This caused great consternation amongst all of the passengers apparently. The atmosphere on the flight was one of “do as we tell you, or we’ll have you arrested” Not my idea of a fun transatlantic journey.
As for he leather seats, I really don’t mind them at all, and I do think they create a more luxurious look aboard the plane, fabric seats always remind me of being on a bus or train !
And Wys… I think it was on that BA flight I was sat adjacent to a JMC pilot ? Could it have been yourself ? Should have asked really.

Erm… I’m flying tomorrow from Brussels to Manchester with BA… on a BAe 146 π
And coming back in friday on the same plane type. And they are forecasting snow in Belgium. I will be able to report how the BAe handles in icing conditions…

Well the alternative to leather is a fabric covered seat.
These seats can tend to deform, so that the fabric works a bit loose and rucks up all over the place – equally uncomfortable.
I think the BA leather is passable – I mean, they have circulation holes in the seat bottoms and the material is not too bad. Far better than the Lufthansa grey plastic seats anyway!!
As long as you are cool they’re fine.

There seems to be a certain belief that leather seats don’t make you sweat. I remember a few years ago flying to Basel on a Crossair 146 (they daftly call them the Jumbolino!!!) in a leather seat going out for a job interview. I was really tight on time and the aircraft was having a few tech problems. By the time I got there I looked like I’d just had come out of the shower!
If leather is so luxurious and comfortable why are the pilots seats covered in sheepskin?

I hate the leather seats as well, i had a recent experience of this before bwia phased out the md80’s. flying from MIA-GND the flight was okay, but the seats were, well you figure it out.

squeak squeak squeak.
Nah, to be honest, I don’t really care what the seats are covered with, although a couple of hours on leather seats after a hot departure lounge dosen’t sound very interesting…

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-01-03 AT 06:55Β PM (GMT)]Based on your opinions Wysiwyg, I shall start taking Flybe….
Well I can’t complain about the ‘all day deliβ, as it has been tasty enough and was a lot more than I had experienced before on any BA domestic flight.
However, I would prefer a proper cup of tea served in a proper cup (those polystyrene cups are awful). I don’t like the idea of the bags as they seem quite hostile and when the cabin crew give them out it seems like they shove it in your face which gives me a this or nothing feeling, compared to a nice laid out tray where everything is visible. Overall it seems a bit too American orientated to me.

RE: Flight report BA8077 LGW-NCL
yes, the all day deli is a favourite complaint of mine…
What’s wrong with going back to a scone, clotted cream and Jam?
I was talking to a stewardess on a pretty empty 757 coming down from GLA to LHR a year or two ago (I was in the back row, so I was able to chat to the rear attendant whilst taxiing around Heathrow). She said she hadn’t had any positive feedback about the doggy bags from passengers, and that none of the crew liked them, either (this was maybe about a year after they were first introduced on the Shuttle services, shortly before they were intoroduced across the shorthaul network).
Anyway, last summer, I was on the 6pm shuttle from GLA, and there was a full meal served, I mentioned to the steward how good it was not to have the deli, and he said unfortunately, it was only due to teh time of the flight that it wasn’t a deli.
They also still serve a full english breakfast on flights departing before 10:30am, so there’s obviously no real reason for them not being able to serve something decent, as long as the time is right, so why can’t they? *sigh*
I still haven’t met a member of BA staff that likes the damn things, either, although one or two of the members on here quite like them…
I’d still rather have my scone and jam back, though…
After all, it’s British Airways, not New York Airways… π

RE: Flight report BA8077 LGW-NCL
I agree that the “all day deli” menu is a bit of a joke. I’d personally prefer no food, just a proper tea or coffee served in decent mugs!
On my last few trips wys, I’ve noticed that BA’s 737’s have more legroom than their 747’s (32 inches compared to 30 or 31).

RE: Flight report BA8077 LGW-NCL
Apart from the obvious leg room difficulties I would always prefer to be on a charter than on a BA domestic service. Unfortunately for me BA is the standard way we are positioned round the country to pick up or return from dropping off an aeroplane at another base.
Personally I would prefer to use Flybe (despite the chance that it may be on a 146).
Gawd, I sound like a right whinger!

Crikey… it’s BA for me one month tomorrow! π
It’s been nearly a year since I flew them last and I loved their service, probably beause I’m not familiar with scheduled flights being a frequent charter flyer.
