I went to the cinema earlier this evening and saw a trailer for this:
Looks interesting and will certainly be going to see it, wondering if anyone else on here will or not? 🙂

I’ve been doing some reading, yes it was/is a Jet Tran airplane, but all development seems to have stopped in 2006. The winglets are different to the photoshopped pictures.

Apparantly at least one MD-80 had winglets fitted, could this be the same aircraft?

Weird, this has a Jetphotos watermark but I don’t have time to go through all their pictures to see what the photographer said:
It is posted on flickr so it could have been shopped between jetphotos and flickr.

Gotta love photoshop 😀

There is a winglet mod for the MD80 series.

By: Matt-100 - 8th January 2013 at 18:40
Also, aren’t certification costs an issue? It can cost tens of millions to get a winglet designed, manufactured and certified – which might be an expense too far for an aircraft already being phased out.

I thought that the introduction of the winglets makes it look really quite cool.
Could/should this ever be applied in reality though…?
Good question.
Some wings can’t take them…the A320 comes to mind..the DC-9/MD-80/90 might as well. .
They’re being added to the 320 now, but require some mods to the wing to do it.

Was your fridge that full of alcohol? 😀
You know, I never checked, in the entire week I was there. I’m not a drinker, so I don’t go sniffing for the stuff, unlike my travel companions. They flew 4500 miles to do what they do at any gathering we do in the UK, Drink.

…forgive some of the dodgy aviation sequences and the MD80 with winglets

Watched it last night too.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. It was precisely what I expected it to be from the trailers.
Oh, and that hotel at the end, it is the Atlanta Marquis Marriott. I’ve been in that very hotel and walked those very floors. Impressive atrium!

Saw it in Vegas in November… It’s a good movie, BUT its not an air-crash movie and if you go expecting that you’ll be disappointed. It’s a movie about a pilot struggling with additiction of alcohol and drugs and the impact they have on his life and his relationships and his work. Yes, it is loosely based around the Alaska MD80 crash, but that’s not the point. Watch it if you have interest in what the movie is really about and you’ll probably enjoy it (and forgive some of the dodgy aviation sequences and the MD80 with winglets) – go expecting a diehard movie for airline purists and you’ll not get much out of it.

I watched it last week…I thought it was a very good film with a good storyline…even as an eagle eyed spotter there was no howlers that usually happen in films featuring aircraft (take off in a DC9, inflight on a boeing 747 test plane, approach in a DC 10 and land in a Cessna 152 type thing) Denzel played the part very well and it taps into the shadier side of cover-ups being attempted by those who stand to lose a lot of money after a crash… You know from the outset that he is in deep doo doo, but also are fully aware that regardless his state of being at the crash that he done an amazing job of airmanship saving many many lives… i recommend it…
Keeping slightly out of the whole piracy thing…for my own reason :)… delayed release dates arent really a cause of piracy… i went to see The Hobbit on release date in uk (dec13th i think).. about a week or two after its first cinema showing and had a dvd quality version of it on my hard drive a week earlier (just preferred see it on big screen)… there are what is called a “screener” which is the full film in DVD quality (sometimes with the odd repetitive watermark popping up every 15 mins)meant for the purposes of the ratings commissions and awards nominations… these have to be done before a movie can be given a rating for cinema release and very often pop up on the net.

…. The delay of an international release only promotes internet piracy as people get desperate to see the film. Which means by the time the film is finally released in cinemas around the globe, everyone’s already seen it illegally on the internet :p
This is the exact point I have been making one other forums and with friends. If they(studios, distributors, et al) released the movies more or less at the same time (within a month say) then there would be a smaller market for pirates. One of my mates says he’d gladly see some of the stuff on the big screen but is fed up waiting months to do so. And to be honest, so am I, particularly when a very good quality pirate is already available! Some of the copies are DVD quality too! Nothing like what the mandatory anti-piracy adds on DVDs claim.

I haven’t seen the film, but I assume it’s flight 261?
By: cloud_9 - 6th January 2013 at 12:57
Broadly based on the Alaska Airlines MD-80 (or 90?) crash that occurred after the elevator jackscrew jammed.
Which crash was this…can you provide any more details so I can look at it?

It was out in US cinemas in November. I’m getting really annoyed with the disparity in US and rest of world releases that seems to be growing again. It’s the 80s and 90s all over again!
I’m surprised, these days the global release dates are usually as close as possible to the national (US or UK) release date.
It’s a race between the distributor and the internet pirates to get the film out there. The delay of an international release only promotes internet piracy as people get desperate to see the film. Which means by the time the film is finally released in cinemas around the globe, everyone’s already seen it illegally on the internet :p

Red Tails was out on DVD in America before it even came out in the Cinema here, I know because a friend of mine sent me one as I was so keen to see it. After watching it and enjoying it, I noticed it was finally released in cinemas here.
I’ve been waiting for Flight since last July when I first saw the trailer.
EDIT: My friend just told me, he’s already got a DVD copy of Flight!

Saw the film last week. Can recommend it. Denzil gives a polished performance. I was reminded of the Alaska Airlines tragedy.

Actually, it’s not too bad technically speaking.
Broadly based on the Alaska Airlines MD-80 (or 90?) crash that occurred after the elevator jackscrew jammed.
It’s said that some of the cockpit dialog is taken from the CVR “tapes”.
There is one major technical item the film makers (the directror is a pilot) don’t want you to notice…but I won’t say more for fear of spoiling it.
