Hi,
I have just ben reading a bit about the Hawker Nimrod.
There is mention of the early production models being equipped with catapult points. These were left off the later models as the Osprey was used in the catapult launched role.
Would this mean that Nimrods were used on capital ships/cruisers? Has anyone seen photos of float equipped Nimrods?

Just to be pedantic and provide a bit of extra info, the Nimrod that ditched was one of the RAF’s top secret R.1’s.rather than the bog standard MR.2. The R.1 specialises in intelligence gathering and other hush-hush activities,so the RAF launched a salvage operation after the accident to retrieve as much of her as they could to save anything falling into the hands of others. I think she was one of only 3 R.1’s in existstance (certainly there are only 2 now) and she’d only just undergone a major overhaul.
Referring to W&R,the nose is as Steve said at Aeroventure. The serial number may be of interest to the suspicious amongst us,it was XW666!

Wandering even further off the original topic, an MR2 demonstrated some rather impressive floating characteristics a few years back when it ditched on approach into Kinloss. Thankfully for the crew, it stayed afloat for quite a while, and I believe was salvaged mostly intact, but was deemed to be a write off. Got a feeling that the cockpit section might be at Aeroventure come to think of it…

Just for a wild moment there, I had a mental image of the current BAe jet MR plane on floats 😀

Me too. Now that would be an awesome sight, can you imagine the wash those floats would create?

The Herk proposal was for a flying boat version, and perfectly feasible. I think (but I’m not certain) it was put forward by Lockheed themselves. – Feet wet!

You’re not alone there…
😮
Reminds me of that proposal to equip the Herk with floats.
Now THAT is mad !!!

You’d be thinking of the Martin Seamaster, beautiful aircraft that had structual problems as well as massive cost overruns so never made it.
I’d post you an image ,,….but….
So I can do this instead..http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=32856&highlight=seamaster

Indeed not :p What was that rather large jet seaplane – shoulder mounted negative dihedral swept wing, two engines integrated right on top – looked sortof like the prodgeny of a Martin Mars / F8 Crusader mating?

Yeah I know, I’m just too mean to spend that sort of money on myself. Mind you my birthday will be in a few months. I can always get my other half to but me it. 😀

Good grief – join Air Britain, buy that book for £26 including P&P, and expose yourself to all the other FAA/RAF books they publish too!

Cheers Paul.
I must get one of those FAA aircraft books.
Tony. And why not? Can you get floats that big?
Alex

S1594 was launhed by catapult in Farnborough July 1930
S1578 was fitted with Floats in 1931/32. Later she was used in catapult trials from Ark Royal (Spithead Sept 32)
S1616 was temporary at Mount Batten for catapult trials Nov 1932
I cannot find any capital ship use only aircraft carriers: Glorious, Furious, Courageous and Ark Royal (also Eagle but only Trials)
