Floyd Bennett Field – New York

Hey Guys… bit late posting these up, but I thought some of you may find these pictures of some interest.

Floyd Bennett Field was New York City’s first municipal airport – which is located in Brooklyn. The site is now no longer an active airfield and is the home to a new sporting complex. 4 of the old hangers have been revamped and turned in the Aviator Sports and Recreation Complex.

Concorde (G-BOAD) is currently residing here too whilst the USS Intrepid undergoes heavy maintenence work in New Jersey.

Floyd Bennet Field was created by connecting Barren Island to a number of smaller marsh islands by filling the channels between them with pumped sand from the water’s bottom, and it is now physically part of Long Island. The airport was named after aviator and Medal of Honor recipient Floyd Bennett who was a Brooklyn resident. The IATA airport code was NOP but now uses the FAA Location Identifier NY22 for a heliport operated by the New York City Police Department.

Most of the buildings and hangers are still there and more or less in tact today… some have really started to rot though.

Enjoy the shots anyhow! 🙂

Appologies for the back lighting on this one. The sun was in the wrong place all the time I was there.
