The London Gazette or Air Force List is the thing for Commissioned Officers

Oct 1944 AFL gives his personal number as 60145.

You can use the LG or AFL to trace his Commissioned career from appointment to retirement or last rank in service before death.

I can’t see a Francis Henry Shortt in Air 78/143, but there is a Francis Henry Short, service number 843983. That’s an Auxiliary Air Force service number from 1925.
