Flt Lt William John Scafe

I am trying to trace any family memebers of Flt Lt Scafe who was the pilot of Spitfire AA802 which crashed in Germany during WWII.

Please let me know if you knew him or his family. I can confirm this information is required for an inquiry being undertaken by the MOD.

I look forward to your replies.

Thank you.

Sue, there are 16 Scafe’s in London – it would probably be worthwhile making a few calls….

Probably better if you do it

would you like the details?

If you register with 192.com you can do a search of the 2002 electoral roll for nowt. Wouldn’t suggest it for a name like Smith but might be worth it with an unusual name.

As I assume this enquiry is due to the fact that his aircraft may have been found in Germany and because he is still listed as missing.

Anyway have you tried the 1901 census. I assume he must have been related to Major General Charles Scafe ex Royal Marines (poss grandfather) with Robert Scafe Royal Marines poss father??

See: http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ and search on Scafe

Looked all over the house for a CD-Rom. Can’t locate it. What you need is the ‘UK Info’ disc – Scafe won’t be a common name I shouldn’t think. UK INfo has electoral roll and directory enquiries info on it. Run a name search on Scafe and that should turn up a few. Start on the area from which he was from, then widen if neccessary. Then sound out a letter with SAE. I have located a few people in that way – most notably the brother of a pilot lost in 1943. I’ll keep looking.

Flt Lt Scafe

Flt Lt Scafe was born in Devon and had family links to Somerset and Sussex. Both his parents are dead and as far as I know he was an only child. Enquiries are being carried through the local media in these areas and have so far drawn a blank. Message posted in the hope / possibility that someone out there may know of a more distant relative.

A bit more info for you searchers:

43113 Flight Lieutenant WILLIAM JOHN SCAFE
1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit
Died 7th September 1942

(CWGC)

Now, if the MOD could give us some details on where he was from it would be quite handy. Would make it far easier to locate relatives.
