Shame that Eastern are dropping IOM though 🙁

http://www.iomonline.co.im/ViewArticle2.aspx?
AIRLINE DROPS LEEDS/BRADFORD ROUTE
POOR passenger numbers have forced an airline to abandon flights to
Leeds/Bradford Airport.
Eastern Airways will cease to operate the route, which flies every
day except Saturday with an 18-seat aircraft, on January 9.

A spokesman for the airline, which took over the route from British
Airways CitiExpress in March 2003, said: ‘This decision has not been
taken lightly.

‘Traffic has declined over the last year and, in particular with the
growth in capacity on Manchester and Liverpool, has now reached a
point where it is no longer commercially viable to continue.

‘We constantly monitor all our services on our route network to
ensure they are commercially viable.’

Passenger figures on the Leeds/Bradford have fallen from 828 in June
to just 624 last month, when figures were 36.5 per cent down on
October 2004.

During the same period, passenger numbers for the airline as a whole
have fallen by more than 1,100 ? much more than the 200 fall in
figures on the Leeds/Bradford service.

However, a spokesman said while the viability of all routes operated
by Eastern from 17 airports around the British Isles is constantly

monitored, there are no plans to drop its other Isle of Man
services, to Newcastle, Bristol and Birmingham.

‘The other routes will continue as normal,’ he said. ‘There are no
current plans to withdraw those other services.’

Isle of Man Newspapers is running a competition with Eastern Airways
and last week offered three weekend breaks to Leeds.

The airline has confirmed the three winners drawn out today (Friday)
can still fly direct to Leeds from the Isle of Man until the January
9, 2006.

If the winners decide to travel to Leeds after that date they will
be flown to Newcastle and onward rail travel will be arranged to
Leeds.

Alternatively, the winners can choose to fly on one of Eastern
Airways’ other Isle of Man services to Birmingham, Bristol or
Newcastle and the airline will organise hotel accommodation at the
relevant city.

Great news, Bergerac is really unexpected, when I saw the title of the thread, I was hoping 2 x daily EDI/GLA! Even though its a route I will most likely never use and is only once weekly, still very nice to see.

Southampton going up to 2 x daily is cracking news, and great timings also, can see myself on a LBA-SOU-BHD-LBA round trip!

Nice to see FlyBe have actually done a bit of their promised expansion, I think we can hope for more, the good thing for FlyBe is they can expand into airports such as LBA and NCL, without basing a/c, and all the costs that come with it.

Just a quick note Ross, I think you have got some of the Exeter flights with the wrong timings! I think you meant 14:35 instead of 12:35, cant see LBA-EXT taking 3 hours!

Eastern are definitly being encroached upon in their traditional market areas by FlyBe. Their latest traffic stats show most of their routes down on previous years. There are less and less routes that cannot be operated efficiently by a full Q400 at low fares in comparison to en emptyish Jetstream at very high fares.

Whilst Eastern have a good thing at the moment, the more FlyBe expand the worse it becomes for them.

Eastern will need to watch out. BE now have some attractive frequencies for business travellers

Eastern will also have to watch out for the fact that Flybe have increased EDI-NWI to 2x daily during the week from the 25th of May.

NCL-SOU goes up to 3 Daily, NCL-EXT up to 2 Daily, whilst NCL-BHD goes down to 1 Daily, FlyBe unable to compete with easyJet perhaps?
