Further to the thread started by Tbirdman a day or two ago, more light can be shed upon the film ‘Flyboys’ due for release in cinemas sometime in 2006.
The August 2005 edition of Flypast has just graced my letterbox, and following an initial brief flick through, gave this info on the film.
It is indeed being filmed at Halton, Bucks. The pictures in the magazine look amazing, so one can only imagine with eager anticipation what it’ll look like on the big screen.
Airworthy aircraft taking part include:
6 Nieuport 17s.
2 Fokker Dr.1 Triplanes
1 Sopwith 11/2 Strutter
1 Bristol F.2b Fighter
1 Scale SE.5a.
The OFMC led by Ray Hanna and Nigel Lamb are among the pilots enlisted for the “project’s numerous aerial sequences”.
Quite frankly, this to me sounds like the most exciting ‘Air Combat’ film for some time. Let’s face it, Pearl Harbour wasn’t exactly stunning…..
I hope this info is as interesting to everyone as it is me.
Rich.

The Nieuports where built by Rob Baslee of Airdrome Aeroplanes at http://www.airdromeaeroplanes.com/homepage2.htm with the exception of the two ‘original’ replicas of course.

Thanks for the great link, tcatco.
Are the Nieuports Graham Lee replicas ?
Cheers

‘Flyboys’
….Aside from the aircraft being used, does anyone know what will happen to the uniforms and equipment that is being used, especially the huts and Bessonau hangar???????
Love the photies taken at RAF Halton, very very authentic setting!

I’ll buy a lottery ticket, go nice with the BE2!!! 😉

Am told there is an American built 1.5 Strutter for sale in for £80k – lovely looking aeroplane, my fave WW1 type in fact seems pretty reasonable to me…not sure whether its the one used in Flyboys though…
Which reminds me Blue Max and GASML – nice pix in the mags – re the BE2 how about a paint scheme from Lilbourne or Easton on the Hill- good Northamptonshire link…
And while I’m at it has the Messenger been flying again (I’m only a chuffin Trustee no one tells me nuffink)
TT
I’m sure Ken Kellet might well be amenable to parting with his 1 1/2 Strutter before it leaves the UK, if only to save him the job of stripping and re-assembling the darn thing again!
It really is a very nice aeroplane, powered by a 220hp Continental (the same as a Stearman) – and about the same price too.
Catch him refueling at Sywell on Sunday and make him an offer Ben!

Hope to see you there to Sir Percy, Steve mentioned i was buying the beers!!! but as you will be flying, aha!!

I’ve got about 3 hours in the Sopwith and it flies and flies well. I wish somebody over here would buy it so we won’t have to take it apart again to ship it back home. I’m also flying the Nieuport 17 from Fantasy of Flight in the movie, those and the another Nieuport (the Popham based one) might just be seen at Sywell this Sunday on their way to another location….
Hope to see you there Tomcat-

Is that a genuine red/white diamond pattern or one they made up?
This was infact a made up scheme used in the film “Darling Lili”, it was based on scheme’s found at home defence and training sqaudrons.

Re: the ‘flyabilityness’ (as an English teacher to be, that’s a cracking word!) of the 1 1/2 Strutter.
There is a picture in Flypast of the aforementioned aircraft taking off, and the wheels are very much off the ground. The pilot is apparantly Ken Kellett.
The aircraft I listed in the initial post are, according to the magazine, all airworthy, and come from a variety of sources, including private owners, Fantasy of Flight (Florida) and the Shuttleworth Collection.
Re: the debate on cgi, it’s gonna happen, and with the aid of enough actual flying aircraft, it’s gonna work. As one reply stated, Flyboys is to be filmed with “the new high-definition Genesis digital imaging camera, which as it requires no film, allows the production team to shoot as many takes as they like”. As well as this, a veteran visual effects supervisor and his “FX house Double Negative are all part of the project – creating the 500 digital effects shots needed for the film”.
Sounds like a cracker to me!

The meeting, or otherwise, of expectations is surely an individual matter, and there is no requirement to be told what we will think. All replicas huh? No kidding. You would think that might have been mentioned in the other 4 page thread- Oh, it was.
There are conflicting reports regarding the flyabilityness of the Sopwith, but are there any pictures of it actually airborne? It looked to me rather a lash-up, and if it IS airworthy, the instrumentation is spartan to say the least.

I think there were two 1 1/2 Strutters on set, one flying (or perhaps taxiing only?) and one static only. The static builds being basically just 3D props.

According to people I have met who are working on it, it wont meet our expectations.
Oh and before anyone asks, with the exception of the Brisfit, all the aircraft are replicas.
As far as i know the Bris fit is only being used for set dressing anyway, if you think that you are going to find anybody who has genuine WW1 A/C that they would let out to a film company for flying sequences you are sadly mistaken. The use of Replicas and large scale R/C models for this role produces excellent results and afterwards they usualy swell the ranks of the Airdisplay world. I would much rather see the use of replica’s than bad CGI, Flyboy’s is i understand using a lot of real time photography supplemented with CGI rather than the other way around. acoulpe of pics of the Irish Replica’s of the sixties attatched for interest.
