Flying Legends 2004 DVD

I am just about to finish the DVDVideo of this years Flying Legends show and I am looking for some opinions.

Is it possible to make an aviation DVD too long? It’s currently running at around 120 minutes (without special features). I think the last few years programmes have been about 90 minutes or so.

Hang on, i forgot DVD’s were regional. bugger.

Glad to hear they’ll be on the DVD, thanks Steve. Dunno if you shot the footage – but you should have seen the two guys faces when I ‘casually enquired’…..!

Snapper, thanks for that, they will be included in the programme.

Also the legends DV will be PAL only I’m afraid.

Hmmm….the upcoming Corsair Experience DVD is gonna be near 4 hours long….better order it and plan TWO nights to watch it…

What’s PORN? Is that a special code for some other type of DVD?

Will this Legends DVD be available for those of us across the pond with different format DVD players, or are we out of the loop already?

Hi all

For what it’s worth there have been studies into the optimal length of a video(some people will study anything!!) and for a documentary the optimal timespan is considered to be 2hrs 20 mins max after which subjects reported fatigue even if it was a subject that interested them greatly.

Further the study points out that people who watched long documentaries were less likely to watch them again if they felt fatigued at the first watching even if they still thought it was a great video!

I guess the lesson could be to keep it interesting and around two hours or divide it into two seperate videos which is a tactic employed recently by movie studios (Matrix 2 and 3 are examples ).

Believe it or not the survey also included a section on Porn and the optimal duration of a porn movie is 20 mins !!!!!! NO COMENT

Kindest regards
John Parker

Hi Steve

There was a series released about ten years ago called ‘Pilots Eye’ which was a set of five videos in all.

They Planes featured were:

The Spitfire
The Hurricane
The Lancaster
The ME109 (Black 6)
The Tornado

I have all but the Lanc & Tornado ones. All are hosted by Cliff Spink except for the Lanc video and include cockpit mini cam footage. 🙂

I found them rather good (if not rather expensive side at the time!), although the Spitfire one could have been better.

But despite this minor niggle, they are a worthy additon to any collection.

They are still available here btw:

http://www.transair.co.uk/product4.asp?SID=2&Product_ID=1038

Still on the expensive side IMO and sadly no sign of a DVD release.

Also available is an excellent video called “Spitfire – The Pilots Eye” which features mini cam footage of Tony Bianchi in AR213.

You can get it here:

http://www.dukevideo.com/products/8375CTX4.htm

Only thing is these are in the PAL format so I hope your video machine is dual format one!

Hope this helps

Paul

I love the mini-cam stuff, almost as good as a cockpit checkout. As for length, well 120 minutes is great. It’s just going to be airplane nuts who buy it anyway, and 120 minutes let’s me get out of doing the dishes…”I’ll help as soon as the Legends DVD is finished dear…” 🙂

One of my favorite series is the Roaring Glory warbird DVDs. I love the first half, where Steve Hinton does his walk around, then goes flying with cockpit cameras. Is there anything like that available for the Spit, Hurri, Lanc, etc.?

Please, no more than two interviews! I buy DVDs to watch the aircraft and some have too many ‘talking heads’ describing what this and that was like to fly etc., which is really quite unecessary

Each to his own Albert.

I found the Keith Skilling interview about flying the Lavochkin which compared it to other types on the 2003 DVD extremely interesting. The cockpit footage that followed was breathtaking. I only wish that Keith had been able to offer the comparison to the Bearcat or other late/immediate post-WWII types which he said that he hoped would be possible at some point once the engine had been “run in”.

I also find vets’ recollections about the respective characteristics/merits of different types compelling.

Good show!

Steve, Are you including the two interviews on the DVD? If not, please can I obtain copies from you to send to them both? If you are, then please send me contact details and i’ll pass the word around the pilots and Association members that the DVD is available from you and that they are on it. Also, if you would like any pictures of them in wartime days (or film foortage of Joe) then please let me know and i’ll dig some out.

2,Please,NO MUSIC,is that in the dvd or do we have the option to turn it off,
3,Glad to hear no commentary either,i detest commentators 😡
4,keep it at a price so people can buy the dvd for Christmas pressies or Birthdays,i feel bad about asking peple for expensive stuff when they ask for a pressie list 🙂

Thanks for that info sconnor. Sounds like that DVD will be a great item with superb enginesounds. Thanks for the dedication on this job. I will look out for this release.

Thanks for the opinions, I’ll leave it at 120 mins or so for the DVD, the VHS will be shorter though (helps to encourage people to get rid of those nasty VHS machines!). The commentary delete option will be featured again, as will 2 unedited minicam sequences, from the Dutch Spitfire and the Polikarpov. No pilots briefing, I’m afraid and DD will be selling it.

Why not make them real time so you get the whole thing on a special double DVD. Then you could have a third DVD with the full uncut in cockpit footage as well. Surely that would only be about £30 for all that which i bet everyone would still buy.

I agree with DaveB.

I find that, although the commentary can be informative at times it gets repetitive year on year.

I always watch last years dvd with the commentary switched off.

Any bonus features this time around?

No I don’t think it is Steve! 🙂

120 minutes sounds good to me.

I enjoyed the DVD you did of the 2002 show with the extra unedited mini cam footage. I also liked the idea to include the list of participants and those that flew them.

Are you doing the same again on this disc?

Also, was the pilots briefing filmed? I’ve enjoyed seeing this on some of the other videos in the past and it kind of adds an important behind the scenes element for me.

Btw, is it DD publishing the video/DVD this year? I could have sworn I saw a sign on their stall at Legends saying so.

Cheers

Sconnor, the longer the better. I felt that some of the recent Videos seem to miss out some of the action and loose the continuity of the action. The DVD needs to be a record of the day.

There is very little commentary on the DVD this year, also full dolby digital stereo sound.

Do you have an option to switch off the commentary, as on last years DVD? That was a very welcome feature.

While I never tire of seeing the pictures, it’s inevitable that the commentary becomes tired after just a few viewings – no matter how good it is.

Steve, was it your lot who filmed Sir Joe Atkinson by the Hurri and Jimmy Stewart by the Sea Hurri?
