Flying Legends 2007 Feedback (merged)

Just got home from the second day of legends, firstly i would like to congratulate the organisers of the event, the whole entry and ticket purchase was impeccably planned and carried off well with the help of the local ATC Sqn. i would also like other peoples comments on the wonderful display that the F-15 flew in formation with the two P-51’s and the P-39, I thought it was a fantastic piece of flying, a real display of skill, considering the mustangs and aircobra must have been going Fast for their age and the F-15 cant have been much above its stall speed, well probably not, still a brilliant piece of flying! i had a wonderful day and the first time i had been to legends in 14 years (being 5 when i last went) Thanks to all involved 😀

Pete,
I always travel by train to Duxford and go through from Ipswich. The journey is a pleasant one, much better than going by car and helps to relax more.
When I get to cambridge i get the courtesy bus to the show which is one of the most thoughtful ideas that the show organisers have come up with.
Sorry if my post was over bearing earlier but it has just become such an annoyance over the years when people start to pick apart these shows.

I never saw any of those thunderbugs at the TFC enclosure, perhaps the combination of propwash, engine noise and overwhelming perfume worn by some of the glam women in there kept them at bay.

Incidentally Napier Sabre, how did you get from Colchester to DX by public transport, was it by special bus or circuitous railway route, if you have any problems in future, catch the bus or train to Braintree and I’ll happily give you a lift.

PR Spitfire cutbacks in 1944 were overcome with the use of an Erk with a pole and the tail off a Victor to re-stabilise the aircraft. Complaints of frostbite were countered with requirements for a stiff upper lip. And fingers.

Well luckily the people I spoke to about their ladders were good enough to understand the problem and from then on refrained from climbing aloft; the intention of the announcement in the commentary was that it would hopefully get the message through to the owners of various other stepladders before those surrounding them were driven to bludgeon them to death with their own elevatory devices.

It works with ‘no smoking’ so let’s have a ‘If you can read this then get off your stepladder’ notice for airshows…

But won’t they have to elevate said notices to the eye level of the intended audience thereby creating yet another problem – high level notices getting into the pics of all the planes?…….

Flying Legends is a commercial venture driven by TFC.

Most years it makes a small profit whilst providing huge pleasure.

Are you telling us that you have access to the accounts?

As for the Grace Spitfire, I already published this on the “Spotted” thread, but this is where she could be seen about tea time on Saturday – having the official helicopter mod applied to the fuselage.

Legends Pros:

The pilots.

The ground crews.

The organisers.

The weather, considering what the previous weeks had been….:)

No traffic problems in or out for me and easy parking…..but I did go on the Harley..;)

Watching Fluffy and Co tucking into their 99’s on the BBMF stand….:D

Legends Cons:

I have to agree that the commentators weren’t the best I’ve ever heard:(

Also agree about some of the F-15 Heritage Flight commentry…..I was slack jawed at times indeed, as were those around me it seemed…..
How to win friends and influence people……not.
Shame, as what was going on in the air was excellent.

Eastman Leather have a ruddy stand there……..which always means the plastic ends up getting hammered….:diablo:

I can understand the step ladder/chained deck chairs/whatever stuff anoying people…..I’ve chilled out now about that these days, as I can’t be arsed with the crowd line bo***x these days and just go and walk around and chill out and enjoy the flying from wherever I am standing.

Flying highlights:

The ‘Ed and Jim’ P-51 routine.

SG in the Bearcat…as always.

‘Generalleutnant’ Spink in the Buchan:cool:

The Lizzie

The Seafire

We had no problems with the step ladders, we had a Damien and a DAF 😉

Actually on a more serious note on one the days when the comentator requested step ladder users to go well back behind the crowdline, a small albeit muted cheer was heard on the M11 end. I am sure a few of the cheers were from average punters. That would indicate that there was a problem.

I did not have a problem myself as I was well back with my ladder which gave me better view between heads and sky.

Odd, the bugs did not seem a problem in the GP corral – maybe they were having too much fun annoying the hell out of the hoi polloi with the beach furniture….

Napier,
It’s the great British past-time. If it’s not the weather, it’s the price of a pint….

And we have to say what a break we had with the weather. I was anticipating a wet and windy Legends, but thankfully the patron saint of airshows (is there one?**) did his bit.

Re the Mods and stifling whinging – while it may seem like a lot are moaning to actually censor such posts would IMO result in these forums dying. Allowing it does mean that the valid points (such as the ridiculous entry/exit arrangements of a couple of years ago got changed – whether by virtue of posts on here and elsewhere I’m not sure but it would be nice to think that someone read the complaints.)

There is a vacancy for a Mod – why not apply? Remove all the whingey posts and see what happens…

**
Blimey, (near enough) it’s only Joseph of Cupertino and Our Lady of Loreto and Therese of Lisieux…….

Quick question. Why is everyone moaning about this show?

I do not see everyone moaning – by and large the comments are very positive about the show

We go on about it for months in advance and when its come and gone you moan. It is so pathetic of you guys, you should be greatful.

Legends is the pre-eminent warbird show in Europe, however it is a commercial event that is presented to the paying public so the concept that people should be ‘grateful’ seems to be stretching things a little. If the show is good enough, as it always is year after year, people will come and pay to see it, its as simple as that.

Many people work hard to get Legends up and running and it has always been, in my eyes, a success. yes I get annoyed about wind breaks and umpires chairs but I choose not to share with others because its been done before on here as I am now well aware that what we go to Legends for should not be taken for granted.

Agreed but that appreciation should not stiffle any comments or criticisms. The people who put on this fabulous event are not delicate wall-flowers unable to cope with the slightest criticism. They appreciate your applause and positive comments but are intelligent enough to deal with any sensible negative comments too. I can say that from experience, having worked as a volunteer for the organisers (TFC) on eleven consecutive Legends (1996 – 2006)

Moderators is not your job to control the amount of sniping and bickering which goes on here? If so then I believe a little self moderation could be used 😉

Come on – its a discussion forum in a free country for goodness sake 🙂

This year once again I traveled there on my own accord and met up with those who I wanted to. Its not an easy journey by any means getting there from Colchester without a car but Its journey i love to make. Legends is a show I have attended for 10 years now and have always respected the work effort that goes into it and yes there is some times a little disappointed when things don’t show but I never get down about it and always look forward to seeing something else that i may or may not have seen before.
So ill close by finally saying, once again thank you to all involved for making Legends 2007 a memorable show as well as a safe one.

Invader had a problem with the nose wheel shimmy damper which had grounded it until it could be fixed. Like a number of other nosewheel aircraft shimmy can cause enormous damage.

That’s not good, Bill Timmers A26 suffered the same thing at Ft Lauderdale when I worked on it & the result was 2 bent props, some rather large gouges in the taxiway & several pounds of asphalt deposited on top of the aircraft….They *almost* got it to a standstill before the nosegear folded…

Brilliant!!!!!, will they be at next years Legends.

Remember them for the first “Will it be at…” thread!

I reckon they might be, dropped one at a time from one very heavy duty aircraft. Each. Mind, imagine the collateral damage if one bounced…

Carolyn was at the London City Airshow for the weekend.
I don`t recall there ever having been TR Spitfire at Legends, but please feel free to correct me on that!

Just another thing, and I know they mean well, but can you really take some of these re-enactors seriously. Some of them look as if they are involved in a Monty Python sketch, I saw one bloke in a US Paratroop uniform that made me think that if C-47’s were occupied by people like him, then it would never have got off the ground, perhaps next year, I’ll dig some of my stuff out, get in for nothing and stand about with bored indifference, I may be an old git but at least I’m slim.

Caroline Grace’s Spitfire landed back at about 18:00 on sunday, I never saw it take off, unless it was before 9:00. From what my missus says, it was stooging around here all day and made an appearance at the Wethersfield RSPCA show, some Spitfires have to fullfill other obligations.
The static engines were fantastic, standing up close, they frightened the life out of me, was that the Welland jet engine that was run up, it was pointing straight at us and we were concerned about it running away…..

Another piece of negativity for you to notch up Trumper.
