Participants’ list below…
And the press-release:
Flying participation announced for the 2012 Flying Legends Air Show
With only three weeks to go to this year’s Flying Legends Air Show on Saturday 30 June and Sunday 1 July, The Fighter Collection and IWM Duxford are delighted to announce some of the stunning aircraft that will be flying in this year’s extravaganza event.
Flying Legends sees the air show debut of The Fighter Collection’s
-Republic P-47G Thunderbolt 42-25068 ‘Snafu’,
one of only two Curtiss-built examples left in the world.
(See Editors Notes for a full aircraft biography).-The Sikorsky S-38
makes its UK debut at Flying Legends. An American twin-engine eight-seat amphibious aircraft, it was sometimes called ‘The Explorer’s Air Yacht’ and was Sikorsky’s first widelyproduced amphibious flying boat. In addition to serving with Pan American Airways and the United States Army, the Sikorsky S-38 was owned by numerous private individuals, including aviators Howard Hughes and Charles Lindbergh.Making a welcome return following their debut UK air show appearance at
Flying Legends last year is the Flying Bulls’-Lockheed P-38 Lighting and the
-Chance Vought F4U-4 Corsair.
The Flying Bulls’ stunning aerial performances will no doubt wow the crowds at Flying Legends.
Flying Legends is famous for presenting a unique combination of remarkable aircraft in superb aerial displays and this year is no different.Over fifty aircraft will be participating, including
-two Hispano Buchon;
-eight Spitfires covering various marques, including two Mark One variants;
-three Hawker Sea Furies;
-three Hawk variants including the Hawk 75, the P40B and the P40F;
-three marques of YAK fighters;
-a Fiesler Storch and
-a Lysander.
Three First World War aircraft –
-the Nieuport 17,
-Fokker DR1 and
-Sopwith Triplane – will fly together for the first time.
The ever-popular Breitling Wingwalkers (Stearman) will perform as a two-ship display.
And of course, there will be displays by the famous IWM Duxford-based
-B-17 Flying Fortress, Sally B and the
-PBY Catalina Miss Pick Up.
The legendary Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
-Supermarine Spitfire,
-Avro Lancaster and
-Hawker Hurricane will display on Saturday 30 June only,
while on Sunday 1 July only the Aerostars (Yak radials) perform stunning aerobatics.

Peter knows! Perfectly summarised.
Oh, and having seen the P-38 at La Ferte-Alais flying full aerobatics (reverse/half cubans, loops, barrel rolls etc), I can only agree with TJ – it’s a sensational display this year…

Well put Peter

When I cast my mind back to the first time I saw TFC’s P-51D “Candyman / Moose” being displayed at Duxford ~ I thought my life was complete because I had actually seen a Mustang fly.
As the years have rolled by ~ Flying Legends evolved into the Europe’s premier warbird show. I would say in many ways it also rivals the best of the shows I’ve seen in the USA too. Sometimes that’s been with sheer numbers and sometimes with the diversity of the participating aircraft.
I look at the line-up for Flying Legends this year and I’m amazed at the quality of types that is appearing in such difficult times for the global economy and ever increasing operational costs for warbird operators.
12 months hard effort by Jane Larcombe and her planning team, the engineering staff and volunteers and the huge financial input by Stephen Grey culminate in an air display that they ( and we ) should be rightly proud.
Where else on the planet in 2012 can you witness a flying display that includes the Hawk 75 / P-40C / P-40F / P-38 / P-47 / P-51 / B-17 / PBY ?
I suspect The Bard summed it up best when he wrote something along the lines of …..
He which hath no stomach for Flying Legends,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made,
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not watch warbirds in that man’s company
That fears his fellowship to be at the air show with us.
Personally ~ I’ll be there Friday ~ Saturday ~ Sunday and I intend to savor every minute of this world-class warbird spectacle set against the theatrical stage of historic Duxford airfield. 🙂

It’s good to see the Breitling wingwalkers and the Aerostars are in the line-up. Gives a suitable opportunity to visit the bookstalls or go for a download…;)
What next, formation taxi Chipmunks, tractor parade, who’s got the brightest hi-viz jacket and who’s got the most sense of powercrazed importance from wearing said jacket… :rolleyes:

I will be at Duxford from Friday morning. Ready to willingly share my usual crop of:
A) Wisdom.
B) Knowledge.
C) Bullsh!t.
D) Blatant ignorance.
If the Red Lion is CAVOK in the evenings I might attempt my death- defying inverted ribbon cutting pass amidst gammon platters and a selection of fine ales. Time will tell!

T J,
Will you be joining us this year?

Saw the P-38 together with the DC-6 here in Norway just over a week ago. The Lightning alone is worth the entry fee…
Doesn’t excite me as much as the older lists did.
It appears the participants list is getting smaller, with fewer surprises.
Surprise, surprise…they haven’t announced the surprises, but the IWM have released this superb shot in the press-pack.
One of my favourites aircraft.
I wonder if and when we might see the three Mk I Spitfires in formation. 🙂

Bob -you have had since 1948 to get used to the idea of it clashing!
I don’t think that many of us will need to worry about the next time it clashes!

Bob,
I concur fully, and the same here…though I will be working at the Waddo show. I normally work at Legends but not this year…
By: Bob - 9th June 2012 at 13:57
Sadly this will be the first Flying Legends I will not be attending since the airshow emerged from “Classic Fighter” back in the early 90’s.
Due to the bloody 2012 Commercialised Games forcing FL forward I have to be somewhere else.

Moan moan moan……you have never had it so good, some folks are never happy.
Well done TFC and IWM for having the guts and faith to keep this show running every year and to the owners , engineers etc for all the efforts they put in.
Seconded.:)
Looks like another classic show….I am really glad the P38 is returning, as I missed it last year, as well as the debut of SNAFU, etc etc. Lets hope the weather does a repeat of the Jubilee Airshow, and not the Thames Pagent:D

This is obviously not the full list as they mention 50 aircraft and there is only 30 listed so far. Legends with no P-51’s or skyraiders…..no chance!
