Flying Legends 2021 moves to Sywell

Yes, this is mentioned in the Duxford thread  but it is worth a thread of its own, as by any reckoning, this is good news.

Legends was (probably) the premier warbird show in the world, and DX was an amazing venue,  but the ‘brand’ continues and there is potential for a great show.

On first glance, feels smaller, but it has a potential crowd line of maybe 3,600 feet against the 3,100 which DX has used over the last 4 years. The runway is big enough for Dakotas, and perhaps the grass area is wide enough for  a dozen Spitfires to bound across together. We can only hope !

The move to Sywell is going to be great for Legends, there are more possibilities to evolve the show there and to build on the format. Richard is right of course that the Legends team have a long history of putting shows together, I can assure you that they are hard at work making sure that, covid permitting, Flying Legends at Sywell will be a huge success.

It was probably due to the “Vulcan effect” then

Many thanks RG for commenting, the one great problem with forums and social media etc is the lack of comment and first hand info from those involved, which leads in turn to rumours and speculation. It’s posts like yours that help to keep things civil and well informed.

FL at Sywell should be a very interesting experience, yes Dux was great but a change of scenery and display axis etc could work wonders. I was last at a Sywell show in 2015 and had a great time, the place certainly has period atmosphere.

Hi chaps

As you would imagine with any large event there is a traffic plan. Access to the site will be through 3 different points all with their own separate car park entrance. Tickets will all be pre-sold which will further alleviate issues.

I believe the most appropriate phraseology here would be that it “isn’t their first rodeo”.

As with any good event there will inevitably be a level of queueing, it would be unreasonable to expect to drive straight in at whatever time you wish to arrive. I’ve been to the odd air show and have never seen a good one where there wasn’t a queue to get in!

Can we assume traffic management will be streamlined? Seem to recall  experiencing frustrating issues in the past.

I might also add Sywell  Aerodrome itself has a long history of organising airshows. Since 1928

Thank you Richard for the settling this, as I had said above its 18 miles away, look what happens within 18 miles of Heathrow and Stansted is just over 14 miles from DX and Legends went ahead no issues.

Silverstone airspace attached. The airspace extends a mere 6nm from Silverstone itself. Sywell is just over 18nm away. This will present no factor at all to Flying Legends.

Road traffic will only be bad if your route takes you directly past Silverstone on the A43, there are numerous alternate routes in that area. However Silverstone is some 23 miles away from Sywell by road, suggesting that the GP traffic would effect the FL traffic is like suggesting that heavy traffic at Thurrock Lakeside would effect entry to the Biggin Hill airshow.

It is of note that FL has been on the same weekend as both the British GP and RIAT in the past and neither have effected attendance.

I think given the experience level of the organisers of Flying Legends referring to them as “numpties” may be a little strong when the reasoning behind the remark is based on assumption. We should instead be grateful of their determination in continuing the event at a new location and the effort that is going in to making it as great as it always has been.

Hasn’t Legends always been the second weekend of July?

“By: Aeronut2019 – 7th November 2020 at 15:52

Which numpty decided to hold it on the same weekend as the Silverstone Grand Prix considering all the traffic and airspace issues that come with it?”

Aeronut, its around 18 miles SW of Sywell, I am sure that is more than enough airspace for the two events not to get in each others way, people going to Silverstone by road will be passing earlier and coming back later so I doubt make any problems on the roads much more than the airshow will anyway

Legends has in the past often been the same weekend as Silverstone, let’s  just hope they both go ahead; great news for Sywell looking forward to seeing the place, )even though it’s now 140 miles away) part of me still hopes it can return to DX (not just because it’s nearer) but the place is still alive with history, not withstanding recent management attempts to cleanse the historical aspect from the other wise excellent corporate location.
