Flying Legends team display practice air to air

Hello,

Yesterday, The Flying Legends team here in Belgium had a practice flight to get ready for the new season.

1. The Stearman got it’s final inspection before the start. The engine of this plane was stored during the winter and yesterday was it’s first flight this year.

2. The next plane to fly was the Stampe SV4C OO-LYR.

3. Also the Tiger Moth was present. See this pic of it’s Jipsy Major engine:

4. And then the last one was Stampe SV4D OO-SVT in which I had a ride! 🙂

Understand what you mean about the lens hood, did some air 2 ground a while back from a Piper Cub, hanging out the door, no way was I gonna use that hood!!

The 100-400 can be of great use for A2A. Did severall shoots with it without a problem. However I always removed the black lenshood as it couldn’t stand the windforce above. In the 1 1/2 years I used the lens, it was a great performing tool. I sold it a few months ago, and somethimes I miss it a lot as it was so lightin comparison what I carry now in my backpack. BW Roger

Well blow me, I’d never have thought of using my 100-400 (D60) for air 2 air.
Thanks awfully chaps

You’re right Roger. They where taken in large JPG’s with my Canon 10D and taken with a 1.6.

Cheers,

I might be wrong, but when looking at the pics at full size, they have all the characteristics( (colour, sharpness) of being taken with a Canon 10D camera in the large JPG setting. If so, they are taken with a 1.6, making his lens an 160-640 mm. But I might be wrong. So Jochen, you can only tell! BW Roger

wow, a 100-400? I was thinking you’d use a much shorter lens, was that on a full frame or 1.6?
maybe I’ll have to revise my thinking & use my 100-400 instead!

Hiya all,
If you dont mind me asking, what lens/focal length did you use for the air 2 air shots Stieglitz, am hoping I’ll be doing some myself soon and have no idea what i should use & want to avoid a pocketful of lenses & mid-air changes!
Thanks,
Al

Thanks Al,

I used a Canon Ultrasonic 100-400 for those pics.

I’m glad you like them Wingswheeler! I got a pic from you too, but I only wanted to post nice pics here, so … :p The flight was a nice reward after we cleaned out the hangar. A great experience as always! 🙂

Ja ja en gelijk maar air to air! BW Roger

Ja! Hihi. 😉

Any chance we’ll see you in the UK this season?

I don’t think so. For now, the Flying Legends team has been requested to appear in the Netherlands, France and Belgium for the 2005 season.

In the past, the team did attend several shows in the UK. Mostely at North Weald and Southend.

Excellent shots and interesting to see your diagram of the formations practiced. I recall when I flew with the Rothmans aerobatic team on a photoshoot just how close adjacent machines appear when in amongst it on close formation work and how much trust you put in those around you. I was flying in formations of one type (ie Pitts) but your mixed type session must have required much planning and professionalism to maintain. Keep safe! Any chance we’ll see you in the UK this season?

When we departed to return home, a local SV4C (OO-PWA) departed together with us.
