Sounds like a fascinating project.

I’ve just seen something called a “Bootleg Spitfire” – a Sonerai modified to look like a Spit (except still with a mid-wing!) and it has fixed gear that are attached to the fuselage. I figure you could have a realistic-looking replica without the hassle of the retracts, plus you’d be able to take the wings off for transport and still have the wheels to move it about on.

Food for thought!

BlueRobin – that Spitfire is 3/4 scale, so it might well be an u/l Mustang, too!

Looks like one of those Loehle ultralight P-51s.

They have an extensive range of aircraft, from the typical ultralight aircraft to some nice 3/4 scale replica warbirds, including a P-40 and a Spitfire.

Haven’t seen or heard anything about the Spitfire in a long while, though 🙁

You’re probably right about the space in the wing – the Spit’s wing thins out rather a lot towards the tips as we all know, so fitting the gear in a scaled-down version is tricky…

One of the reasons why John Isaacs didn’t do them on his 60% Spitfire! 🙁

What about authentic outwards retracts ?
Not enough space in the wings for wells ?
Or maybe ground handling be as good (bad) as a ‘109….. ??

The Monoplane (well, most of the ones I’ve seen) have all been about 65hp VW – 4-cylinders.

Mine? It’ll run on a full four-cylinder VW – with any luck – of about 75hp. OK, so it’ll hang out the sides a bit, but I don’t mind so much!

Retracts are a nightmare for small planes – believe me! Was even contemplating having them retract INwards!! 😮

yeah Taylor monoplane, thats it.

Does it run a half VW motor or the full 4 cylinder ?

Retracts should clean it up nicely. And a nice PR blue scheme
(ala R/R’s Spit) would look simply superb !!

A Taylor Monoplane? Or a Taylor Titch?

Believe it or not, that’s exactly what I’m hoping to base my replica on, the Monoplane. It’s about the right size, and with a VW engine, I have high hopes of the damn thing actually working! And yes, it’ll hopefully have retractable undercarriage….;)

Someone has already done something similar – a Canadian guy by the name of Ed Johancsik, who in fact built a Spitfire XIV replica from an old Taylor Titch project, with fixed gear. It’s now flying on an 85hp Continental, and I think it’s pretty damn smart!! I think it’s for sale – wish I lived in Canada, or had the cash to pay for it….!! 🙁

it reminds me of that spitfire kit you could get in the 60s and 70s, wasn’t it called Taylor or something like that…

sorta looked like a Spit if you squinted your eyes a bit…:D

😮 I wish I’d seen that! I got up close and personal to this little beast a couple of years ago – gave me more than a little inspiration! 😉 You wouldn’t happen to have the pics to hand, would you??

turbo – I’m only working on drawings just now, and might now have a way of getting the gear to go up and down! There is a rough 3-view sketch, if anyone wants to have a look (bear in mind it’s not professionally done! )

Hey Daz,

Do you have any pics of your yet-to-be-built 1/2 Scale Spit kit ?

WAR FW190

I looked up the PFA website while researching some more into my half-scale Spitty just now, and the WAR FW190 IS cleared for aeros! 😮

Actually, I’m sure G-WULF was used for aeros, IIRC.

IIRC from the Today’s Pilot article on the WAR P-47, the WAR designs are NOT cleared for aeros in the UK – although I think they are in the States.

Still, my half-scale Spitty would be just as happy chasing those Fw190s around a flat circuit – when I get it built! 😉
