Flying the Heavy Metal

Anyone see it on Discovery last night?

Bit of a treat for ageing headbangers that like DC3’s (and any other old aeroplanes really)[1].

Bruce Dickinson was an engaging presenter and there were some very nice air to air shots of Air Atlantiques G-AMRA (with Mr D in the 2nd seat). Couple of Comets, and some good 707 stuff.

Worth a watch – first of the series last night and bound to be repeated ad nauseum.

Corsair166b, I am recording them for a mate so if you want me to run off a copy for you just let me know, and once the tapes full Id make a copy for you too.

but dont tell anyone…

Being the ‘mate’ in question, I never actually recieved it did I ?

Bruce came down to have a run in XL426 in 2006, and as has been said, is a top guy. It was just a shame on the day that the weather was so fowl, and kept many people away. 😡

Its a great series, and he is a brilliant presenter – thankfully I recorded all but one episode when it was on first time round as I don’t get the discovery channel where I am now!

Incidently, I used to work with him at Astraeus and had the pleasure of flying with Bruce a few times (I was crew, not a pilot) and the way he is on the series is the way he is in really life, the sheer enthusiasm he has for aviation is amazing!

His employer is helping with sponsorship of his current world tour. Front for the band, rear for the gear. It was adapted for this configuration at Lasham late last year.

I enjoyed the first series of Flying Heavy Metal and hope to see him do more.

Anyone know if Bruce is planning another series of Flying Heavy Metal when he is back off tour?
Have to say I thought the first series was rather good. Should be on BBC 1 or similar, would probably do rather well even though it is a bit specialist.:)

No doubt the series will be repeated on Wings. And repeated. And repeated…

More BD on Telly would be a good thing – he came over very well. I reckon he’s got the indefinable “Fred Dibnah” quality, if you see what I mean. That mix of communication, knowledge and enthusiasm. Well I know what I mean!!

He was actually at DX today playing with the tanks for a similar series on the ‘normal’ Discovery channel. One of our staff managed to get her LPs signed 🙂

Excellent news! – I think he’s a great presenter.

Incidentally this current series is also on the ‘normal’ discovery channel (not Wings) – 9pm on Wednesdays.

I met BD on two occasions, very nice chappy. Someone who uses this forum now and again(I won’t say who) is good friends with Bruce.
When I last met him he was also flying a Piper Aztec and selling his share in a twin engined Cessna in the states.

Didn’t see the programme though.

Bruce is a very modest fellow, and quite approachable. He used to have a share in a Jungmann, but let it go a few years back. He once did an ‘unplugged gig’ in the flying club bar. Bloody great, it was.

As it happens, he is also a very keen and competent fencer. Next time I see him, I must ask him to knock me up 15 yards of larch-lap.

Steve Morse from Deep Purple has the same kind of job….he flies for an airline when not touring! Found that out this last summer when I saw them in Denver….very cool!

A little known fact (well to me anyway!) is that Bruce Dickinson, when he’s not touring with Maiden actually flies commercial jets. As a job. With an Airline.

How cool is that! That’s enthusiasm – he’s probably made enough money to have a nice little stable of exotic warbirds but would rather fly 757’s as a First Officer (although I don’t know if he has other aircraft as well).

Agreed DaveB – Good guy and jolly nice chap to boot! Not to mention an Olympic Class Fencing Champ as well in his younger days.

Iron Maiden once played at the Oval pub in Norwich as the “Nodding Donkeys” in 1992. Not a lot of people know that.

Great programme – it’s always good to see someone bouncing around with so much enthusiasm for aeroplanes…… 🙂 I like Bruce – he’s a good guy.
