Flying to Norway

I’m going on the Hurtigruten (Norwegian Coastal Cruise) in September.

My plan is to fly out to Oslo and return from Bergen. The ‘Norway Air’ shuttle seems the best option, but their website gives absolutely no idea of when and where the shuttles leave – no timetables or links to them. I haven’t used a shuttle so far, so am I missing something?

The last time I read about shuttle services was decades ago when services operated from Heathrow to Prestwick, where they claimed that a plane would be put on for a single passenger if that was the situation.

‘London All’ is given as the shuttle’s departure point to Norway but I think it may be from Gatwick or Stansted. I need to know more. HELP!!

I’ve had my holiday in Norway, and what a stunning place it is! I very much enjoyed every minute of the the Hurtigruten cruise (that’s pronounced “Hooti-rooti”).

Anyway, I ended up using SAS for all my flights – four off. They were very good and it was 737s all the way. -400, -600 and -800 models. Boy, do those smaller versions have some take-off power! I jokingly asked a pilot at the end of one flight if he had been a fighter pilot, as the take-off was a rocket-like zoom! He just smiled.

Incidentally, SAS baggage reclaim was the fastest I have ever seen on every flight. At Heathrow on my return, I visited the toilet and took the long walk to baggage reclaim and there was my bag on the carousel.

Some notes on Norwegian and Sterling: Sterling had no direct flights to Oslo, and Norwegian was extremely expensive. Being an old wrinkly, I didn’t manage to book my flight home from Bergen to the UK until the day (last Sunday) and Norwegian wanted over £300 for a single fare. The nice lady at SAS managed to get me a cheaper flight via Oslo.

I hope SAS survives.

Norway Air Shuttle is just a name of an airline service, the old BA London-Glasgow/Edinburgh ‘Shuttle’ was a regularly timed service that did not require advance booking, you just turned up and bought a ticket, like catching a bus or train. And yes, they used to have a standby plane in case one service was full. I can recall a Trident parked up at GLA for this very reason, and in fact BA used to run a TV commercial in the 80’s showing a Trident flying in sillhouette against the sun with the shape of just one passenger in a window.

Norwegian Air Shuttles Timetable from London – Oslo is this(Date is random)

Departure | Arrival | Duration
08:25 London-Stansted | 11:30 Oslo-Gardermoen | 2:05
20:00 London-Stansted | 23:05 Oslo-Gardermoen | 2:05
20:00 London-Gatwick | 23:10 Oslo-Gardermoen | 2:10

Only problem is that they dont fly Bergen – LGW, but they do fly STN

Departure | Arrival | Duration
19:20 Bergen | 20:15 London-Stansted | 1:55

Hope this helps you a little

Thanks lads. I did wonder if the flight times would be shown if I booked, but I’m only ‘looking’ for suitable flights at this stage.

Seems daft that they don’t at least give you an idea!

Will check out Sterling, thanks.

Norwegian Air Shuttle leave from either Gatwick or Stansted I believe. If you go to their website , click on the english flag on the first page to get a translation , then click on the boxes to choose your route. When you start to go through the process of booking , it will offer you the times of travel. It is feasible to go in through Oslo and back through Bergen. You just have to juggle around with the choice of days you want to go/come back on.

Don’t be fooled by “shuttle” , they are just like a Norwegian style Easyjet or Ryanair in the sense they have a conventional timetable.
