FlyPast Fly-in

Just ordered my tickets Eindhoven-Stansted (bY Ryanair for an unbelievable low price) to go to the FlyPast Fly-in in August at North Weald. What can I expect there (in general), and is anybody else going there? BW Roger

I believe these would have been the ones owned by Flying A Services, all three of which (Wildcat,Hellcat and Corsair) have since been sold abroad.

I used to be a Squadron Marshaller (1989-2004) and the aircraft were as Ant correctly put were all part of the Arnold Collection and made a rare airing for the day.

I happened to be there the day the Hellcat flew in (was working for Intrepid then) and the minute it landed, the hangar doors opened, it taxiied in and then the doors were closed behind. Venturing into the hangar to retrieve something (cant remember what) I was told that there was nothing in there, but sat in the middle was a WW2 Navy fighter still with its pilot within. Secrecy or what? 🙂

Possibly the late Paul Morgan with his Corsair, Fury and/or P51D?

Yes, it’ll be nice to see it out and about again. I think it’s been at Legends in the past.

I take it that the CAA issue with the P40 paperwork is different from the issue that is stopping the Shackleton returning from the US?

The aircraft has been flying for many years, it has been at North Weald for some time being placed onto the UK register, any issues that have been found have been resolved or are in the process of being resolved by working with the CAA. I think we can leave the ‘restoration paperwork issues’ alone as this has alledgedly only occured with 1 warbird and my understanding is that this situation may be being resolved.
If you work with the CAA you will be able to fly your aircraft, however if you pitch up and say here is my aeroplane and I’m going to fly it they may take a dim view.

The Mustang is owned by Peter Teichman who also has the former Intrepid Staggerwing.
Be nce to see this beastie out and about.

North Weald

In the halcyon days when the Squadron first formed (I was member 111 and some Hunter nut kept trying to persuade me to part with my number) We used to attend Fighter Meet every year.

Lofty and I would park a camper behind the Squadron bar on the Friday evening, knock back unfeasibly large quantities of Tollys (Then later Abbot) and invariably end up around midnight weaving a drunken course all over the airfield swapping near incoherent rubbish about Hurricanes and deeds of derring-do.

This was how the nice people from Aces High (The big grey hangars) caught us recreating the famous Coventry Blitz with the help of their He (CASA) 111. However they were eventually quite friendly when they realised we were booze-sodden flying nuts and not souvenir hunters or vandals.

Eventually we became quite well known there. Had an invite to look round Robs Lamplough’s hangar and sit in (I think) a Sea Fury (Long time ago!)

The Aces High hangars were of no interest whatsoever, being given over at that time to the sets for a TV programme – The Crystal Maze.

Visiting the Squadron, never a bad idea anyway, usually allows you to wander along and peer in their hangars. Out of respect for the owners though we generally stayed outside unless specifically invited in. Now the owner of a ragwing myself I can appreciate that this was a very good move on our part, people I don’t know in my hangar make me nervous 🙁

Still in the same scheme, hopefully soon to emerge from it’s transfer onto the UK register.

I guess ‘recently’ was a bit longer ago than I thought!

Does anyone know if Jumpin’ Jacques is still in the same scheme or has it been repainted?

The filming was still on hold a month ago.

The Gilmour P51 was exported to America last year and had been a Duxford resident (with ARCO) for a year or so prior to that. I’m sure it was Robs aircraft that was mentioned in connection with a Mustang line up, I guess we wait until 9th & 10th August for confirmation.

David Gilmours P51 ‘G-SIRR’ was based here until recently, but I think it has now been exported.
Rob Lamplough usually bases his P51 at Filton with his Spitfire VIII, although his hangar at North Weald still housed his project aircraft, including the Hurricane, when the hangar was open a couple of years ago.

Is there any news on what is happenning with the 2 C54s? Is the filming still going to take place?

I’m not sure that you can, the only other times I’ve been to NW when there hasn’t been an event on is to see somebody or something in one of the hangers. I think that general access is difficult to some hangers and impossible to others

I suppose I asked for that;)
Can you get access at any other times other than events like the fly in?
I went over there to the squadron once but didn’t get to see much:(

Certainly in previous years you have been able to get over to the hangers, but they don’t look any different up close, just big grey sheds :p
If the event is held on the Squadron side of the airfield access is pretty good and other than where the active aircraft are you can wonder around fairly freely and weep at the site of the B25 rotting to death near the motorway.
That said the hangers are usually closed, but if a door opens there is often a stampede of people clutching note books.

Can anyone get over to the hangers or do you have to be party of the squadron?

Doesn’t Robs Lamplough still have his hanger at North Weald? I appreciate that his Mustang is away more than it’s there so it could be that one. Talk was of the desire for 4 P51’s

Alternatively Flying A Services were getting their P51D back into one lump again, so you never know……..

Last time I went to NW (about a month ago) the DC4’s were still mouldering away quietly on the Aces High ramp.

Roger – the CASA is most likely stored away in Norfolk by now. I think the C-54/DC-4 are still there. North Weald is an interesting
place with plenty of interesting W&R ish aircraft !
