Flypast photo error-July issue

This month’s register review sported the news of the TFC’s Grumpy moving across the pond. Although the accompanying photo is a nice one, it doesn’t show Grumpy, but Duke of Brabant Air Force’s N320SQ in its previous 320 Sqn guise as HD346 “NO-V”.

Just wanted to let you guys know… 😉

I also noted several pages that had no Lancaster content at all. Stoopid magazine! :p

Couldn’t find a photo on the internet, so went and dug out a book. Images from Squadron/Signal’s “B-25 Mitchell”.

Looks like I was wrong and the small bubble didn’t have any (real) armament installed, but that doesn’t mean that there never was a gun in there as someone may have done a field modification. The first type turret was only used on the B-25A, then from the B model until the G model the small bubble was installed, and the H model and onwards had the larger turret.

In a way Grumpy does have a tail turret, it is just the smaller type as fitted to the C and D versions. Also Grumpy has an upper turret installed in the rear position (again, as per C and D version) while the DBAF Mitchell is a J version which should have an upper turret just behind the cockpit, but doesn’t have it installed.

Correction, I just found a photo and indeed Grumpy doesn’t have the tail turret installed. But if it were, it would only be a glass ‘bubble’ instead of the fuselage endplate you can see on the photo below. Originally this would also have had armament installed. I’m still trying to find a photo of how it should have looked. The rear fuselage of the J model is deeper by comparison which was done so that the larger turret could be fitted.

Photo of the DBAF Mitchell added for comparison (taken by some unknown photographer 😉 )

I had wondered about that, Archer, as Grumpy appeared in a thread a while back minus her tail turret – which I was told she’d never had!!
