FN 16 Turret, Help!

Hi everyone,

This is my first post to this forum, but I have been a reader for sometime.

My father, brother and I have been working on a FN16 turret in our spare time. We have absolutely no information on this turret, except for the information on the data plate and a scan from the book “British Aircraft Armament”. That is it!

Please come forward if you know anything about this turret. Does anyone have any pictures of a similar turret?

All the parts we have are on the turret. I know for sure that we are missing the gun elevation ram. The turret must have been used for training as there is no cupola or exterior frame members.

I have attached a few pictures.

Any information is welcome.

Love the way they fly – maybe silly question but – are there any Whitleys around these days?

Hi GNOME

In answer to your question, there are no survivors but we are rebuilding one. Check out the website for a few pics.

Todd, I will try to get you a scan of that Whitley photo on the wall.

Elliot, sure I would love some scans of the AP on this turret.
I don’t know how it ended up in Canada. All of the bolts have British standard type threads.

We have quite a lot of FN16 turret parts for our Whitley – in fact many of them are recognisable from your pictures! I also can send you some scans from the AP as well – they will help you ID all the components you have there – it does look very complete. I am very curious as to how it ended up in Canada – as far as I know, there turrets were only used on Whitleys.

We do plan to start work on our front turret sometime this year and when we do, a lot more information on these turrets will come to light as research progesses.

Can you give me your email addy please?

Thanks
Elliott

Try contacting the aviation museum at Elvington (Yorkshire), they have a room full of restored gun turrets and who knows what else! I am sure my friend Bill Napier there could help you.

A picture of one of the turrets at Elvington.Good luck with the rebuild.

Peter, the door and instrument panel are from an Anson.

Thanks Papa Lima,
I will have to contact the aviation museum at Elvington to see if they can be of assistance to us.
