Too bad the Fokker 100 production was discontinued.

The world’s only VTOL Fokker? 😀

Back in the 60s Fokker had a project with Republic in the USA to create the D.24 fighter for a competition that eventually led to the Harrier. A scale model can still be found at the Aviodrome museum in Lelystad.

Following that project Fokker joined VFW for a STOL fighter with a similar configuration as the Harrier. This project was also terminated, but did yield several protoypes. One of them survives in the Deutsches Museum at Schleißheim.

To this day the remains of Fokker are a mayor contractor on other STOL projects including the JSF and NH-90 helicopter.

Sorry to change the subject, how is the security to get to that area at Schiphol

No secutiry. You can enter freely without being searched, but there are cameras on the deck and from time to time security may walk over the deck. The same applies to the viewing decks at Eindhoven, Maastricht, Rotterdam and Niederrhein.

Düsseldorf has two viewing decks. The one at the train station you can enter without security after paying a modest fee. The one at the terminal requires a safety check, but taking your drinks with you is OK. Zurich also requires a safety check, but liquids won’t be confiscated. Frankfurt has a viewing deck as well, but I can’t remember if it requires a safety check or not. I prefer going to the perimeter as views are better there.

I can still remember the decks at Heathrow and Gatwick, neither had security checks.

Having enjoyed the open air viewing area on the top of terminal at Christchurch, i wandered if there were any such facilities in Europe, knowing how strict airport security in the UK is and that it now follows an EC mandate. I was impressed to find at berlin schoenefeld there was a roof top viewing area, but with a security screening area prior to going out, with all the same restrictions as central search for liquids and sharps, etc. To use this facility, and i’m guessing for staff costs to man it, you had to pay a few euro’s. Would people on here pay that to get a bit closer to aircraft at other airports(and away from screaming children!).

I remember being moved on a regular basis from Ringways piers when either the El Al or Aer Lingus flights were coming in again well before 9-11.At least we have the viewing park full of nice jems plus an as good replacment to the brickworks near the new runway.

Don’t you know, all enthusiasts are suspected terrorists? No sense in opening viewing platforms from which we can lob our WMDs onto parked planes.

In the days when the Piers were open at Ringway, and when A/c had stairs not ramps, I’ve seen “Viewers” drop stuff to passengers. Innocent stuff like a make-up bag that was forgotten, or similar. This is of course after baggage check and X ray.
The piers were shut to viewers a long long long time before 9-11.
In this day and age, I’m glad the public can’t get that close TBH. Spotters will have to make do with the peri. fence / viewing parks.

Pity British airports don’t have the same visitor friendly approach.

Wow!
I remember re-registering it (and all the others) back to KLM from KLMuk. This one was previously G-UKFE.
