Foot & Mouth: 5 Years to the day

5 years ago to this day (19/2) the first case of foot and mouth in the UK for 20 years was found in an abatoire (spelt completely wrong i fear 😉 ) in Brentford, Essex. The government immediately set up a five mile exclusion zone around the grounds as well as around the two farms the animals originated from. The country believed the disease could be contained and the first epidemic of the disease since 1967 prevented – boy were the wrong. The disease went on to cost the agricultural industry £800,000,000 to £2,400,000,000 (£800mil-£2.4bil). Unfortuately the disease continues to effect farmers and leaves a horrible aftertaste in rural folks mouths even today,
