RE: For dcfly and Hand…and anyone else whos interested.
Not to insult anyone, but I think the whole charvel/jackson thing is bunk. It started in the early 80s when Eddie Van Halen told everyone that the custom guitar he uses was built by charvel(The white & black striped one that appears on the first VH album which he later painted over red which resulted in the red, black and white guitar he was famous for). So ofcourse charvel goes from being an absure custom guitare shop to a world renown guitare maker, and jackson, their best guitar tech spins off is own label. But guess what, a while later after some research, its found out that charvel never made that guitare at all, and that it was just something made by some guy that charvel sold for him.
I personally believe that guitare makers are missing out big time on sustain by not using more solid materials for body and neck of guitars. Do you know why the les paul only has a thin layer of maple laminated to the surface of the body? Because the original les paul was solid maple, and this hard, dense wood made the guitare sustain TOO MUCH.
Kabir- I know of some guys whove had custom fretted necks with indian scaled microtones. You should take advantage of your rich musical heritage and bring something new and advanced to the rock world.

I know they’re a bit before your time but do any of you rocking aircraft freaks like the Who, I’ve just bought a DVD of them in concert at the Albert Hall in London, with Noel Gallagher, Eddie Veeder, Kelly Jones, and the excellent Paul Weller guesting, one and a half hours of heaven, great stuff and highly recommened

I prefer neck-throughs…and yes pedals being cheaper and you have full control on the effects.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 27-10-02 AT 06:56 AM (GMT)]I couldnt agree more about,if a guitar sounds crap when it’s unplugged it cant be that good when its plugged in, but surely a competent guitar player can make any instument sound good
re: effects boxes, yes, pedals are cheaper and probably easier to use, but personally I’ve only ever needed 3 different sounds from my guitar, 1. a clean dry sound for rhythm, 2. a mid range sound for playing Jazz/Blues(preferred kinda music) and 3.a heavy distorted sound(rarely used). All these sounds I can programme into my Korg then all I need to do is just touch its pedals to get what I want. My preferrence these days though is electro-accoustic, I’m not sure I want to many decibels anymore
I’m sorry SOC I cant comment on your choice of guitar, although I’ve heard of them and seen them used by bands , I’ve never actually played one myself therefore I’m not familiar with them

RE: For dcfly and Hand…and anyone else whos interested.
Kabir-I agree. Pedals are the way to go for me-I get the sound I want for a hell of a lot cheaper! The key to a good guitar sound as I have found is the guitar itself: if the guitar sounds like ##### unplugged, it usually doesn’t sound very good no matter what effects you use.
A question for everyone: neck-through or bolt-on? Neck-through gives you great sustain but means a lot more $$$, but bolt-on can deliver clearer, crisper sounding individual notes. My Jacksons are bolt-ons merely due to the fact that they were cheaper, but I have no complaints as I can get perfectly good sustain through my setup when I want it. So my vote goes for bolt-on: equally versatile with the right equipment rig, but a lot cheaper (which means you can buy more guitars!). What does everyone else think?

Jacksons are great guitars….even i use a Morley wah-wah. I keep changing my tunings…depends on what i want to play. Yeah, Mustaine is an awsome guitarist…well was awsome you can say…he cant play now.
Till now best distrotion we get is from Metalzone…thats the ultimate. I use a Korg Ax1000G processor….pretty good.

Guitars? I can get in on this.
I have three of ’em, one is a standard Yamaha P.O.S. that cost me like $150. Strat-style body, two cheap-o humbuckers, not too bad to start with. Of course, its now eight years old, and looks and sounds like it!
My other two are black Jackson (the only brand!) King V’s. One is 24 fret, tuned to E, tunamatic bridge; the other is 22 fret, tuned to Eb, Floyd Rose bridge.
I play through the clean channel of a Charvel amp, and use a DOD FX86 distortion box along with a Morley wah.
My only complaint? There’s no gig bag for a King V. Them gigantic hardshell cases are a pain in the ass to lug all over the place sometimes.
Influences: Bill Steer, Dave Mustaine, Mike Amott, them guys from Sentenced who’s names I never spell right.

No , I don’t play Jazz. I guess that’s the ultimate style, but I try to play a bit of Brasilian , which harmonies are close to Jazz.
I like blues either , the schemes are much easier. However I play for myself , have no plan to be on stage , and I’m having fun with it even if it’s not perfect (by far) .. 🙂

RE: For dcfly and Hand…and anyone else whos interested.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-10-02 AT 10:33 PM (GMT)]My fave guitar was quite well documented I thought , it’s Fender, either Stratocaster or Telecaster, although a Gibson Les Paul has a great sound. But these guitars are mainly used for rock, blues etc, the one Gibson I would like to own however is a 355 especially with twin humbuckers, mindblowing! The Gibson 135(I think thats the right one ) hollow bodied, great for playing jazz on.
Hand, do you play jazz? I try to but I need to structure it better than I do, my first love is blues, proper blues , you know ,pre-war rural type blues, I possess approx. 120 blues albums from Blind Willie McTell(1920s)to Peter Greens Splinter group(present day)but that’s elitist stuff, for everyday listening I like Oasis, Turin Breaks(you’d like them Hand, they’re essensially accoustic)Stereophonics, The Doves and similar bands, not bad for a 53yr old eh?
I have 21yr old son who plays in a band, he plays a Gibson Les Paul, he also has the same taste in music as his old man.
Whats the new pedal Kabir? is it a wah wah or a pitch shifter , or volume?
