For Fw189 fans

This link was posted on a photography forum, and I thought it would go down well here:

Being able to read German helps, but ist nicht essential!

Yes, and the next pic – I think – shows the gunner crammed in.

Here’s a question for the Fw189 experts; what is the purpose of those ‘strakes’ fitted to the propeller spinners?

Is it something to assist the air-cooling of the engines?

(There is a good view of them in number 25/30 of this set of pictures.)

Not a place I would have had any desire to spend much time if I was being shot at but if not imagine the cracking view of where you had just come from.

It’s to do with the self governing of the props, air resistance against the fillets works to change the angle of the blades. I’m sure there’s someone who can explain in more detail.

Am I correct in assuming the Pilatus P2 uses the same system? Always wondered what the purpose of that strange spinner was.

Come to the Forum and get educated……….!!

Planemike…….

I think you can safely assume that the P-2 uses the same system. As previously pointed out an elegant and simple system.

Adrian I only looked at the first pic when I looked before and have just taken the time to go through all of them. As you said a knowledge of German is not required but it does make the collection more interesting if you have. Akk I can say is thank you for posting. I don’t know why but I am a fan of anything with twin tail booms and also aerial photos so you can imagine that set spoilt me a bit.

Not too sure whether you can improve on that explanation!

The front end of the spinner, with the vanes, can turn independently of the rest of the unit. As speed increases, the vanes cause the mechanism to automatically coarsen the propeller pitch – and likewise as the airspeed reduces, the pitch is automatically fined off.

The same system can also be seen on more modern Walter-engined aircraft such as the Zlin 326 and 526.

A masterpiece of elegant engineering. Just don’t ever push on the spinner while pushing an aeroplane around, I am told it can be very expensive!

Wow – some very interesting period photos, of both the men and the machines. Every photo has a story, you can almost be there for some of them – completely authentic.

Thanks for posting.
