Tim’s also just bought TFC’s Skyraider hasn’t he?

Nice to see he’s basing his fleet at North Weald. Increasing the population of aircraft (flyers and restorations, not the rotting corpses) there might assist the campaign to save the place…

hey guys found this on warbird resourse forum

Fairey Gannet AEW.3 G-KAEW

Posted on G-INFO on 9.1.04 to Tim Manna. This is identified as ex XL500 (F9459). My notes show that XL500 is listed at Chatham Historic Dockyard and is ex A2701, Culdrose, Lee-on-Solent, Dowty-Rotol, Lossiemouth, 849 Sqn. (Wrecks & Relics). Another potential flyer to join the growing collection at North Weald. Excellent news.

tim manna is getting a nice growing collection!

Gannet Pilot

Grimshaw,

We can put you in contact with someone who flew our Gannet, if you are interested.

Thanks Stringbag and Tempestnut – you know you’re getting old when a vintage aircraft is made airworthy, is retired outdoors, and you can’t even remember when or where you saw her fly.

That aircraft (XL502) is currently in open store at Sandtoft, which can’t be doing much for its health. It was retired from the airshow scene in 1988/9 I think?

Found this in my old photo’s, Biggin Hill 87 according to the slide mount. Not sure of the serial though, and cannot remember the sound of it.

The Gannet, in the sense that it has a ‘purposeful’ appearance, reminds me of the A-10 – beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

BTW, that Oshkosh photo is marvelous – stuts, props, wings, and appendeges misc.!

Just for the record. This was taken at Oshkosh 1996. [Corrected from saying 1994]

Call me crazy if you like, but I think the Gannet is a nice looking machine – not beatiful in the same way as a spitfire or concorde but nice in a brutally purposeful way.

Grimshaw (Mark)

Does this mean that you will be selling your Gnat?

I doubt that one will ever get any where near flying again. The photo was taken back in the 80’s and she is in the middle of a kiddies amusement park if I recall correctly.

Yes I see my mistake in the identification now, and why, this same photo(or very similar) was misidentified as the Sandtoft example some time ago on this forum, so I automatically assumed, not being familiar with all of the serial numbers, that this was the Sandtoft beast, apologies.
Which ever way up it will be great to see a Gannet flying again, good luck to all concerned.
