For those that ride Motorcycles. How young is too young?

My lad has been wanting to ride pillion on my Triumph for the past couple of years. He finally grew large enough to comfortably sit and rest his feet on the pegs and hold the grab rail or my jacket adjusters.

He’s a little over Five years old. Having ridden around for about 40 minutes and took in a brief shopping stop, I wondered how sensible it had been. I don’t think he is likely to fall off as I have a back rest on the top box and I clipped the panniers on. However, if I had to brake or change direction suddenly we may not fare too well.

It seems to be a catch 22. If I wait until he is older he may be a little wiser and stronger but won’t have the experience that he will gain if I take him out once a week.

With regards to how young is too young,…
When I was 6 months old, my old man and lady used to put me between them down Mum’s jacket on the bike…….in this case it was a Kawasaki Mach 111 500 !!!!!
(A bike not known for it’s good road manners !!! :dev2: )

Mog , these babies are license losers , half the revs of a Jap bike and double the torque , burbling along at 7000rpm you always feel like the bike is just idling along until you have a look at the speedo and sh1t yourself when you find you are sitting at 120mph . Any photos of your SP ??.

Al

I used to have the same ‘problem’ with my Triumph (Hinkley) Tiger… far too easy to go far too fast far too regularly!
thats why I ride something more ‘involving’ these days which makes you work a bit more to ‘make progress’ !! 😀

[QUOTE=Barnowl]ageorge -pillion on an RC30? The Honda which does 80mph in 1st gear with no rear seat or rear pegs? God why don’t you just throw him into a skip full of needles and have done with it?

😀 , he did have a ride on the RC30 , basically he was jammed between me and the home made rear hump , the bike had a set of Harris rear sets and he could put his feet on my heels when we were running . Incidentally the bike had a HX built motor and was originally built for the KRC endurance races – first gear was too tall and the bike could almost touch 90-95mph in first gear – but this made the bike pretty much unusable in traffic . If you look at the very back of the Ducati photo you can just make out the tail of one of my NC30’s – he’s never been of any of them .
The Ducati is a home built bike – basically built from crashed Duke’s around a brand new 916 frame – I still have her and a dismantled 888SP – my idea is to give my two boys one each when they are old enough .

Nothing wrong with Harleys mate, my dad loving refers to my LTD 454 as the “Double H” as in Hairdressers Harley.

That reminds me- i need to wash her today, before the salt sets in after my voyage from the Isle Of Man a few days ago. Otherwise, knowing the Sakakrapy’s build quality there’ll be nothing left of her!!!

😉

engine is the wrong way round.. you want the cylinders sticking out in the breeze, keeps ’em cool and your knees warm.. 😀 😀

this place below does 2nd hand and part-ex kids gear…just dont get him the leather jacket with tassels on it – could mentally scar him for life – he may end buying a Harley! 😀 😮 Neil.

I have a 4 yo turning 5 in November. I have a bike, a Duc – it’s a mono-posto so no issue anyway – not like the one that guy Moggy thinks he isn’t has (or hasn’t – how many negatives make a positive?). Anyway, would I do it? Maybe, carefully, in light/zero traffic etc (which I’m sure is how you have approached this). But I agree with others, if you want to give him that thrill, please protect him better against the unlikely – look at your own gear in that photo. Issue is of course cost vs a growing body – anything available on eBay or similar?

She said There’s something in the woodshed
and I can hear it breathing… 😉

I think it helps if you give kids a healthy dose of risk in life. I watched Whistle Down the Wind last night and if the kids were realistic enough (’61) they walked about for miles. Are we smothering them too much?

I did pillion on a Honda Cub at age 7 and was sh!t scared though. 😮 You may now laugh!

What a beautiful Duke you have though! My dream bike would be a Kawasaki ZX-6R, or a KTM Duke II. My dad’s got several old Triumphs, which i’ve ridden the Bonneville and the Trident (both amazingly beautiful machines- even if they do leak oil regularly)

I started on a 1968 Honda 50 tht was my DAD’s 1st bike- then progressed to the Kawasaki KH125, which i took my test on- then jumped on my beloved Kawasaki LTD 454 as seen above and have never looked back.

Absolutely no problem , but as mentioned more suitable clothing would be better. My eldest , Jamie aged 8 , was on the back of my YZF750 / RC30 /NC30 and various other sheds from the age of 5 . He progressed from a Suzuki LT50 quad to a Yamaha TY80 and now a Yamaha YZ80 , his younger brother , John aged 4 , has now claimed the quad . I would highly recommend a small quad like the LT50 to start with – just to gain confidence before jumping on to something with a clutch .

The photos should be of John on his quad ( purely for posing – he is never on it unless he has boots , gloves and a real helmet ) , John on his brothers TY80 trying to be James Dean , and the other is my last Ducati – obviously a Monoposto , definately no passengers .

I would have taken him on, but protected him more. Obviously you would not be doing any stupid speeds so I say let the little guy brag about it at school 😉

My mate came off of his R6 yesterday, no damage to him but the bike needs new plastics. I’m siting my test on the 10th, so hopefully my Zx6r will be keeping just it’s tyres on the ground…

a weekly trundle round once a week sounds like a good idea for him at that age – he looks quite safe, happy and comfy in amongst the luggage ! have you considered one of those ‘belt with handle devices’ that they market (pillion pals or some naff name?/) – might just give him something more substantial to hang on to and he’d be even more aware of what you’re doing.. and maybe some proper gear.. trouble is that once he gets a set of leathers (!) it’ll probably lead to wanting his own off-road bike… 😀
