Explosive bolts on the top fin and rudder, too. Not an entirely successful system as the canopy jettison arrangement ripped the pilots arms off. They had to reach up and pull two levers, very hard. When the canopy released, instantly, they didn’t have time to let go. 🙁
Info from “Wings on my Sleeve”, Eric “Winkle” Brown.

I think the Dornier 335/pfeil was the first aircraft fited with an ejection seat (and explosive bolts on the props)

Correct, it was. Ejection seat was spring powered and only the rear prop had explosive bolts

IIRC there was a scheme proposed for fitting an ejection seat of some kind to the Spitfire…!!

Think you would have heard about it by now if there was!
I believe there are two survivors – both in Sweden (for some minor reason like they were the only air force to use them or something…). I have a note that there was a J.21A in the Flygvapenmuseum at Malmslatt (or Linkoping! Either way in Sweden) and I believe that there was a J.21R being rebuilt from bits and pieces – probably at the same location.
This might also have been the first aircraft operationally fitted with an ejector (or ejection?) seat – but then again I could be wrong…

I think you may be wrong, some German military aircraft in service during WWII were fitted with ejection seats from about 1943 onwards.

There are three J21 survivors in Sweden, two of which can be found at the Swedish AF Museum at Malmslätt. The third, a J21A, is preserved at the Wing F 15 Museum at Söderhamn.

The only country apart from Sweden that appeared to have any interest in buying the J21A was Afghanistan.

More on the J21 can be found on http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Jakt/112J21.htm and http://www.avrosys.nu/aircraft/Jakt/116J21R.htm

While on the subject of Swedish aircraft, Saab S 18As were listed by the producers of the movie The Battle of Britain as possible Dornier Do 17Z substitutes. Unfortunately, the last two had been scrapped in 1964.

Jan

Um, er, oops.
Spent an age searching for J.21, J-21, J21, etc too!
Anyone else suffering with the system falling over every half hour or so?

I would not say unfortunately.. They were already fitted with ejection seats, and for a good reason.
