I watched “Force 10 From Navarone” last night for the first
time in nearly 25 years and found it to be very entertaining,
largely due to the strong cast.
Is that the BoB Memorial’s Lancaster at the start???
Also, I noticed it appears they’ve used an unused shot
from The Dam Busters? During the Lanc take-off you
can clearly see the modified bomb-bay, larger astro
dome and missong upper turret that was distinctive
of those conversions. All other shots are of a standard
Mk.III.

The airfield scene was filmed at Les Lande in Jersey using flatpack backdrops.

I know the BBMF Lanc was used in the Guns of Navarone but the work in force 10 was a mock up or model as at the time it was touted as Harrison Ford has left the Millenium falcon for a Lancaster, but the BBMF had the bomber in 1977 so i dont know if they would have time for movie antics?
Also some footage from Battle of Britain was used when the fighter attacks the Lancaster according to imdb, i have a copy of the dvd somewhere i will have a look.

Many years ago I had a letter published in the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association’s journal pointing out that PA474 was not in fact used in the making of “Guns of Navarone” but this incorrect fact continues to be published in various journals.
I felt the Lancaster sequences were the worst executed part of “Force 10 From Navarone”. It is not very likely that a group of soldiers would find a fully fuelled Lanc on an airfield (particularly in Italy) ,climb into it and take off without any prior experience of flying the type and with no assistance from any ground crew. They should have rewritten this sequence to have them hijacking a (real) Dakota avoiding the need for stock footage and poor model shots. Alastair MacLean seemed to have a thing about the Lancaster . In the book of “Where Eagles Dare” the opening sequence features the commandos parachuting from an RAF Lancaster rather than a Ju 52 and the sequence also talks about the Lancaster’s windscreen wipers struggling to cope with the snow. Hardly surprising since Lancs don’t have windscreen wipers.

Hello,
If i remember correctly, they filmed PA474 over the Channel flying back from an airshow on the Channel islands and used this footage in the finished film.
I think this has led to the confused message that PA474 was used in the Guns of Navarone.
Cheers

Really? I’ve got “Guns” on DVD, and I don’t remember seeing it.
I think it was used for soundtrack dubbing ofengine noises when the airfix Lancasters are crash landing at the start and they do the scene in the de-briefing room with that well known Australian Richard Harris talking about the mission.
