Ford Duratorq fuel injection snag

Anyone know about the faults with Duratorq engines? I have a 130 TDCI Mondeo Zetec S with what seems like a big problem.

Driving home, little fuel in the tank (the light had only just come on) and going up a slight incline (slip road). The engine died as if it had run out of fuel. Topped up with a jerry can of diesel, and it still refused to start. It turns over, but won’t light up. Fuel is getting to the injectors. Any ideas before I start emptying my wallet on it in the morning?

I’ve an old style focus with the 115PS TDCI duratorq engine, and regularly run it down until the light comes on – in some cases I’ve filled up, and with calculations have worked out there was less of a litre of usable fuel in the tank…. No problems at all – where I live is fairly hilly, and not had a problem with engine even spluttering…. only spluttering was from me, hoping to get to the pump in time!!!

Dunno if it is mondeo fault in particular rather than a fault with the engine. Perhaps I am setting myself up for a problem too!!

Regards,
Scotty

I never said i disliked Belgium (and i even owned a Belgian-built car… you know, the brown and fluffy one), but you do know that displaying Belgophilia on these boards… well… you know 😀

Or it could just be because your car is Belgian…

You didn’t seem to have a problem with that area of Belgium a couple of hours ago ! :diablo:

For most car types, there’s usually a couple of gallons left in the tank if the light has come on. Your best bet is to hit a Mondeo forum.

I did…. I just wanted to see if anyone not anal about Fords had anything useful to contribute, and you have all surpassed yourselves. Thank you. The info I’ve had so far points to a common fault with the Duratorqs – the fuel pump dies, injects swarf into the injectors, and costs the owner well over a grand in parts! I’m going to bleed the fuel first, but then its wallet time. Again, thanks guys. I knew I could rely on you!

I hate belgian/american half british cars…..wish I’d kept my old Triumph GT6….

…Never go under 1/4 tank.

If you have an injection (or common rail) diesel, that is. If you’ve got an airpocket in the fuel pipes leading to the injectors, it’s not likely to restart on it’s own. It shouldn’t be too much of a problem, the techies of your national automobile club (AA/ADAC/ANWB/whatever) should be able to solve this. Don’t forget that the plunger/dipper giving you the amount of fuel in your tank is indicative, not absolute. Not much of a problem with petrol engines, but more an issue with modern diesels.

But then again, most of those are leased anyway so who cares…

Or it could just be because your car is Belgian…

Well, as far as I know, if you had some air getting into the fuel circuit, you’ll have to check with your dealership.
Never go under 1/4 tank.
