Forgotten Bombers – Avro Lincoln

I’ve just read the excellent Flypast ‘Forgotten Bombers Supplement’, which has prompted me to post this thread. A few years ago we went to Cosford, when you had to pay to go in! My Father was an LAC at Lindholme from 1952 to 1955, working on Lincolns, so we made a bee-line for RF398. We got talking to one of the museum volunteers and he very very kindly let us inside – it made my Father’s day… and mine.

Apologies for the quality of the photos – I didn’t take them!

Also, recently on E-bay, I won an RAF Lindholme ‘At Home’ souvenir programme from 1958, and with it came a photograph taken on the day of six Lincoln B2’s in formation – RF398 being one of them. I know RF398 was not, but I’d like to find out if any of the other Lincolns were at Lindholme during my Father’s stint there. Clockwise from the bottom left hand corner, they are:- RF389, RE360, SX944, RF398, RA719 & WD143. How would I go about obtaining this information? The photograph was taken by R. Ward of Liverpool.

Dean.

Hi – My Dad was the pilot of the Lincoln SX924 that crashed in Watson Lake. I recently found his notes in his flight log. I know very little about it. Can you tell me more?

Thanks,

Debra

Hello Debra,

I received your email via the museum and will reply later this week as I have quite an amount of information of the crash including photographs and the crash report.

I know a former RAF tech who would take great issue with that statement.

Me too

Flt Lt JB Stephens.

Great to see the Lincoln with its own thread. I enjoyed many happy hours as an ATC cadet flying on them from Upwood in the 1950s.
I am trying to find out what happened to Flt Lt J B Stephens, a Lincoln pilot with 7 Sqd at Upwood in 1955. I have tried 7 Sqd Association and various other possible leads, but cannot find him. I have the date of his commissioning and retirement, but that is all so far. I tried on this forum some time ago, but without much succes.
The photo below, that was sent to me by Tony Ainsby, shows him stuck in Singapore: he is just visible, leaning against the propellor in the background. Nice picture of the Lincoln, anyway! Note the deadly ladder to the cockpit. I fell off one of those one Westwood. Peterborough, would it.

Hi Laurence. The ATC unit just wouldn’t happen to be 115 Squadron at RAF Westwood, Peterborough would it?.

The ghost of RF398 was pure invention, I was a member of the RAF Cosford Aerospace Museum at the time and Hendon wanted to move RF398 to Manchester.
Many members had worked on Lincolns and didnt want to loose her so invented the ghost and got local media in on the act for the publicity, Hendon relented and left 398 where she was.

I know a former RAF tech who would take great issue with that statement.

That could be correct Lynx815. A chap on another site suggested Shallufa.

Thank you for the effort of trying to trace the incident.

Loking through Air Britain’s Broken Wings for 1951/1952, the only one that it could be is RA689 of 9 Squadron that was lost at Shallufa in Egypt on 26 Sep 1951. The undercarriage was damaged on take-off and collapsed on landing.

Unknown Lincoln

I’ve posted this elsewhere, and on other sites, but no one can identify the aircraft or location, though it could be middle east late ’40’s early 50’s. It was amongst old photos’ of my fathers time in Malaya 1951.

Anyone got an idea?

WOW!

That must have been quite a sight and sound – perhaps not as speedy as the Reds, but some spectacle!

On the scrounge. I need a high res image or two of a Lincoln – preferably Australian. It’s for an article.

EK764,

try Peter Roberts of Mt Isa Qld
He has a webpage dedicated to pictures of the RAAF Lincolns.

http://members.tripod.com/~imogiri/lincoln.html

Contact Peter at imogiri@bigpond.com for high res copies of any of his photos.

Alternatively try the ADF serials site Lincoln galley at http://www.adf-gallery.com.au/gallery/Lincoln

Contact Darren Quick or Rod Farquar via their message board for access to high res versions of the gallery photos.

Grrrrr,

Does anyone else know this site or have pics of the two Lincolns in Argentina, I assume both are listed in the new Flypast article?

regards

Mark P

There is an excellent piece in a recent “International Air Power Review” (which is as rare as the Cosford ghost these days!) which outlines service of the Lincoln and Lancaster in Argentina, including testing their own “dambusting” operations, use in the civil war etc. Its a great read with some useful pictures as well.

Scouse, I hope you don’t mind, but I’ve taken a few minutes to tidy up your scanned photograph – I’ve gone over it and removed some of the dirt and detritus that gathers with age, and I’ve sharpened it just a little to make it slightly clearer.

Of social note, are the young men in drainpipe trousers, the girl in the mini-skirt suit, the boy in the shorts with socks & sandals and the very flimsy looking pushchair. However, the officer’s uniform hasn’t changed a bit, so far as I can tell!

So it’s a lot more than a great picture of a Lincoln!
