Forgotten De Havilland

Hello,
I’m researching the De Havilland DH93 Don for a modelling project and I found only photos of the prototype L2387 with the training gun turret. I read that all production a/c, about 30, were built without turrets and were sent to various units as trainers/hacks but couldn’t find any details regarding them. Does anybody have photos and details of these later examples?

Thanks in advance

Thank you for your replies. I’ll see if I can get a look at the Putnam book through a friend.

Not expert, but at least some books are to hand. 🙂

The Dolphin only appears to have flown twice. First flight September ’36, scrapped in December. It was structurally overweight and DH were too busy with the Albatross and mass-production of the Tiger Moth to spare the design staff to sort it out.
No original drawings have/had come to light but there’s a GA drawing in the Putnam DH book.

The Don, not in my opinion one of the more attractive DH designs, was originally designed as a multipurpose trainer with turret et al. “Officially-inspired improvements”, made it overweight so the turrets and other training aids were removed and they were delivered as communications aircraft. 30 built plus another 20 without engines.
A few pictures in the Putnam book but, a) copyright and b) I’m not going to open my book out flat to get it on the scanner.

At least we have the DH. 92 Dolphin registration; G-AEMX, c/n 6400, although my copy of the British Civil Aircraft Register says the registration was not taken up, and E-3 was used (again! see the Don photo in post #3).
Where are our de Havilland experts?

Try de Havilland Support? (www.dhsupport.com) Or the DH Moth club? (www.dhmothclub.co.uk)

Neither cover the Don as such, but I’m sure have come across info, or can point you in the right direction. Please bear in mind that DH Support is an entety for supporting flying DH types, so they may not be able to spare a lot of time!

The Don’s rare, but what about the DH Dolphin? Only 1 photo, no plans, little data survives…

Martin, that’s the prototype; I’ve never seen a photo of a production example! I too hope someone can put up more information on them.
